염상섭 소설에 나타나는 서구중심주의 비판 연구 -『사랑과 죄』의 모던걸 비판을 중심으로 = A Study on Criticism of Western Centrism in Yeom Sang-seop’s Novel

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 염상섭의 장편소설 『사랑과 죄』의 문제적 인물인 정마리아의 단발 사건을 1920년대 후반 조선과 일본의 유행에 선풍적인 영향을 끼친 아메리카니즘에 대한 염상섭의 비판적인 관점과 결부시켜 해석하고자 하였다. 정마리아의 단발은 이후 정마리아의 변장을 위한 서사적 장치일 뿐만 아니라, 정마리아가 당대 조선에 선풍적인 인기를 끌었던 미국 할리우드 영화의 ‘플래퍼’와 ‘팜므파탈’ 표상을 동경하여 자신을 영화 속의 주인공과 무비판적으로 동일시한 결과이다. 나아가 단발을 한 정마리아의 허영을 천편일률적으로 비판하는 주요 인물들과 사회의 시선은 그들 자신에게도 내재되어 있는 서양 문화에 대한 동경을 간과하고 있다는 점에서 이중성을 지니며, 이는 작품 내에서 유일하게 객관적이고 이성적인 시선을 견지하는 인물 김호연과의 대비 속에서 비판의 대상이 된다. 요컨대 염상섭은 『사랑과 죄』에 모던걸의 표상과 모던걸을 향한 사회의 천편일률적인 시선 모두를 비판적으로 그려냄으로써 서구 문화를 맹목적으로 모방하는 조선 사회를 비판한 것이다. 이러한 관점은 『사랑과 죄』를 시작으로 『이심』, 『광분』, 『삼대』로 이어지는 염상섭의 장편소설에 등장하는 여성 범죄자를 인물론적으로 분석하는 방식에서 나아가, 여성 범죄자를 기계적인 시선으로 바라보고 평가하는 사회의 결점을 풍자적으로 그려내는 염상섭만의 비판적인 사회의식을 확인할 수 있다는 의의를 갖는다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article sought to interpret the bobbed-off incident of Jeong Maria, a problematic character in Yeom Sang-seop’s feature novel “Love and Sin”, in connection with Yeom Sang-seop’s critical view of Americanism, which had a strong influence on the popular trends of Joseon and Japan in the late 1920s. Jeong Maria’s bobbed hair was not only an epic device for her subsequent disguise afterwards, but was also the result of Jeong Maria’s admiration for the representations of “flappers” and “femmes fatales” in American Hollywood movies that were a sensation in Joseon at the time, uncritically identifying herself with the main character of a movie. Furthermore, the views of major characters and of society uniformly criticizing the vanity of Jeong Maria’s bobbed hair project duality in that their own inherent admiration for Western culture, an aspect that is criticized in contrast to Kim Ho-yeon, the only character in the work who maintains an objective and rational gaze. In short, Yeom Sang-seop criticized Joseon society’s blind imitation of Western culture by critically depicting both the representation of modern girls and society’s uniform view of modern girls in “Love and Sin”. This perspective is meaningful in confirming Yeom Sang-seop’s critical social consciousness, which satirically portrays the flaws of a society that views and evaluates female criminals with a mechanical perspective, going beyond the method of analyzing female criminals in his feature novels.
