Contemporary Marxist critic Fredric Jameson gets rid of the analytical framework of “third cinema”, mapping cognitively the Filipino film The Perfumed Nightmare in the world system, with a view to drawing a map of the geopolitics in late capitalism from this postmodern art form. Jameson’s analysis of this film is an effective practice of “cognitive mapping” aesthetics, and his theoretical perspective of Marxist hermeneutics has useful implications for studies on the films produced in the third world. Despite some misreading in the course of mapping the film, Jameson’s unconventional analysis provides film art with an interpretation paradigm for reference.
