What changes and echoes can the philosophy of other on Emmanuel Levinas provide in our lives? In order to meet our concrete reality to the other and ethics he emphasizes, what translation and transformation should be done? As you know, Levinas insisted on my infinite, irreplaceable and unassailable responsibility for the other. Because of this, Levinas’s philosophy was considered never to fit into our political reality of democracy and was even judged anti-political. But Levinas never overlooked our reality and the importance of politics in our reality. This paper corresponds to the preliminary stage in the first attempt to comprehensively examine Levinas and Enrique Dussel who said he had awakened from the “sleep of dogmatism” by Levinas. It aims to identify the philosophical career of Dussel and the position of Levinas in it. As we will look forward, Dussel’s philosophical career was both intelligent and practical to change and reform his time. Dussel, who lived as a single practitioner and thinker in the special reality of 20th-century Latin America, deeply intervened in the popular liberation movement, social movement, and decolonization movement and tried to philosophically theorize their movement. We will examine how Dussel’s philosophical career progressed, and how Levinas’s ethics affected there. It is important to confirm what Dussel studied through Martin Heidegger and Paul Ricoeur, and at what point he broke up with them and referred to Levinas. This work is not only to confirm the goals and ideologies of the philosophy of liberation, but also to see how Levinas’s philosophy can be accepted in reality, and how and why it has to change there.
