형평운동의 역사사회학적 탐구 되짚어보기 : 형평사 창립 100주년에 즈음하여 = Historical Sociological Analysis of the Hyongpyong Movement Reconsidered: On the Centennial Anniversary of the Hyongpyongsa

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper deals with the method and contents of the researches on the Hyongpyong Movement which attempted to abolish social discrimination against paekjong and to establish an egalitarian society. Since the 1990s, researchers have accelerated their efforts to find the various subjects on the Movement using diverse methods. In the early stage of research, main materials for the studies were the articles of the newspapers and magazines covering the Movement events. Nowadays, however, researchers can find proper materials from various sources, including the compiled materials books on the Movement with sources produced by Japanese colonial authorities.
The main purposes of the research were to restore the historical process of the Movement and to analyze the dynamics and complexity of the Movement. This study attempts to find the social conditions for producing the Movement with the historical sociological perspective and also to examine daily life of paekjong and their social and economic situations in transition. It also finds the complex aspects of members of the Movement through its leaders, organization, and active participants. And it understands the purposes and aims of the Movement which consists of two elements in their activities: the recovery of human rights for human dignity and the improvement of the communitarian interests. Finally, it understands the social dynamics as a social movement under the Japanese colonial rule. In particular, these reveal that the process of the Movement were influenced by the conflict of paekjong with the antagonistic groups against the Movement, paekjong’s solidarity with other social movement groups, and the surveillance and control by Japanese colonial authorities.
In conclusion, the Hyongpyong Movement is a historical example that showed the social process in transition from a traditional society to a modern one which includes the promotion of human rights, the transformation of the inherited paekjong industry in Choson society, and the complexity of social activities during Japanese colonial rule.
