What makes Dongrae subway station significant is that being a historical, cultural, and geographically strategic importance; it has more to look at to study the characteristics of a ground station than any other ground station.
Especially its significance as a transfer station to the 3rd line to be constructed, study on the station is going on in the form of renovation, focused on the ground station, from integrated and developmental aspect.
Considering that, many other regions will also have ground subway station not a long after, the study aims at suggesting some direction for it.
Not only the distinction of ground station but also that of elevated station constructs the characteristics of the station, being built on the piers above the river. Therefore, based on the theoretical background of Dongrae subway station that implies constructional side and regional aspects, more convenient and pleasant new design that reflects cultural elements as well is required. For the station building, the elevator, meeting spot, passage, cultural facility, entrance, finish materials, copper wire, molding like elements should be given emphasis, but the study expand to include even the outside design for some part of the building.
The facing style platform embodied such agreeable conditions as the useful space and the natural lighting.
So, taking advantage of theses conditions, plants can be grown with benches around and other resting facilities. So that new concept of platform can be planned not only for a platform of a brief stay but also for the function of resting space.
Considering the floating population there together, benches the size of which is 15 persons each and vending machine could be provided together telephone booth. But the could be one more amenity of space on the wall for the exhibition of art works to provide pleasant and yet comfortable space.
The appeal of entrances at the South and North falls behind its image as the first view to the station, considering the flood size of population at the two entrances especially in rush hours.
Therefore, in designing the building, the entrances that are viewed first from the outside should be treated with three-dimensional figure that can symbolize the image of Dongnae. And it all would add up to more direct and natural space for the people.
Because cultural space can take advantage of the regional elements of the Dongnae, it, of course, could be necessary and more directional way to let Dongnae known.
To mention about the inside of the building, the waiting room near the north gate has more free space than south gate because the size of floating population is smaller than that of south gate.
But as matter of fact, the space is not in full use.
For more effective use of the sort of free space, it can be used for cultural space such as permanent exhibition, and market place for local produce, handicrafts.
And the free space outside of the building can be utilized for public performance, and Sculpture Park, introducing cultural elements
Exhibiting graphics and raised style painting and the photos on the staircase and on the wall on the passageway can help signify the symbol or public image of the region and help enhance the quality of its environment, contributing to getting together art an the public.
As for the solution to the issue of passageway between platforms, the space between up line, down line, and both wickets should be constructed with piers. And the pier is important in terms current of appearance so that space structure should be necessary to build in confection
And for the bench design of Street Furniture, the overall image is considered by using wood or stone, considering the harmony with the entire image. And traditional way of casting of wastebaskets in earth would be employed, think of its functional practicality at the same time to place them at proper spot practicality, taking into consideration of the flux of people and the use of space.
And the open style would be suitable for the Public telephone booth, bearing in mind its maintenance and management and taking advantage of the elements of traditional mini architecture to the benefit of pleasant space.
With regard to entire tone of colors, the selection of light and warm and low chroma would be suitable. Because the traditional elements are used in the design, its planning should take place, taking advantage of the use of stone, read blocks, magnetic tile to tell the image of Dongnae.
Drawing new concept from the study by rediscovering existing problems and indicating new direction, its conclusion is as follows
1. The current problem of Dongnae subway station is the lack of minds and interest of the local people.
The difficulty with practical administration of the project and design are linked to the problems directly or indirectly. And also it can be said that it lacked in reflecting the trend of the time and recognition of the future orientated direction.
So, it was able to suggest direction for the future based on existing problems.
2. The most common medium in recognizing Dongae is the scurry of big traffic.
Therefore, it can be used recognizable medium taking advantage of the visual experience with it.
3. The effective use of free space and its efficient management can bring about new type of culture, contributing to establishment of organic space relationship with existing building, to induce public interest and active participation with psychological and emotional familiarity.
4. Being built above the river, it has been recognized both for its convenient space and symbolic architecture of the region. The practical culture near the station became to take advantage of the space in the subway station so that it can contribute the development of the region.
Therefore, it should be developed into the representative and symbolical architecture for the region.
5. When understand the psychological effect of the color of the building, we are obliged to feel the necessity of study on the importance of the color of Dongnae station with regard to social recognition and sentiment.
6) It is the place where new culture comes to its existence as a way of practical culture depending on the personal, social recognition, so that it can be expected as a place where functional social idea can be overcome.
The study dealt with entire background and process that constitute design a far from inclination toward space element.
According the study, subway station, as a public building, can be the most convenient, beautiful, and ideal place in terms of historical, regional, and psychological approach. But there are a lot of practical limitations in applying the approach based on the practical theory and data analysis.
