계측 단위의 전통지식으로의 가치

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 최근 관심이 높아지고 있는 전통지식 중에서 계측 단위의 양상과 의미를 살핀 글이다. 길이, 무게, 부피, 넓이 등의 계측 단위는 우리 생활에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 것으로 다양한 양상을 보여준다. 특히 사물을 세는 단위는 사물의 생태나 상태를 고려하여 붙인 것이 많아 전통지식으로의 가치가 있다, 그런 점에서 계측 단위는 누적된 경험의 전승이고 기호로 된 질서라 할 수 있다. 아울러 계측 단위는 신체, 사물의 생태와 긴밀한 관련을 맺고 있는 존재 단위이고, 사물의 획득과 가공과 연계되어 인간의 활동과 긴밀한 관련을 맺고 있음을 보여준다. 계측 단위는 인간과 생태의 연결, 획득과 가공이라는 활동의 표현이라는 체계를 가지고 있다. 그래서 전통지식으로서 계측단위는 다음과 같이 개념화된다. 계측 단위는 경험을 기반으로 한 전통의 체계로 존재하면서 존재에 대한 인식의 기준이 되고, 인간과 생태의 연결, 획득과 가공의 인간 활동을 표현하는 수단이다. 이러한 계측 단위를 전국적으로 수집할 필요가 있고 생태, 생업과 연계하여 의미망을 다각도로 도출할 필요가 있다. 계측 단위에 대한 연구는 산업 구조, 생업 주기, 농경 어로에 대한 연구를 통해 심화될 수 있다. 그런 점에서 계측 단위에 대한 조사는 단독으로 이뤄질 것이 아니라 생업과 농경 어로 조사와 함께 병행되어야 한다. 나아가 계측 단위가 사용된 다양한 구비전승, 속담이나 수수께끼, 관용어 등도 함께 살펴야 할 것이다. 전통 지식에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있고 그것이 무형문화재 지정 범주의 하나로 자리잡고는 있지만, 계측 단위에 대한 지식이 무형문화재가 되기는 어려울 것이다. 다만 이를 통해 가치를 부여하고 제도권에서 의미를 부여한 무형문화재의 기저에는 우리 생활과 긴밀한 관련을 맺고 있는 현상으로의 민속이 있다는 인식은 확산될 수 있다. 무형문화재 제도는 민속 활용의 한 사례이다. 국가에서 설정한 제도로 가치 부여 정도로 의미를 단순화할 수도 있다. 중요한 것은 그러한 가치를 부여하기 위해서 다양한 민속에 관심을 갖고 조사를 진행하여야 한다는 것이다. 계측 단위의 의미를 살펴야 하는 이유이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article observed the aspects and meanings of measurement units in traditional knowledge, which is recently receiving a lot of interest. Measurement units such as length, weight, volume, and area show us diverse aspects as they can easily be accessed in our lives. In particular, many units that count objects are attached in consideration of the ecology or conditions of objects, thus having value as traditional knowledge. From this point, measurement units can be considered the transmission of accumulated experiences and order in the form of symbols. In addition, measurement units are units of existence that are closely related to the ecology of the body and objects and they are connected to the acquisition and processing of objects, forming close associations with human activity. Measurement units have a system that connect humans and ecology and they are the expression of the activities of acquisition and processing. Therefore, measurement units as traditional knowledge can be conceptualized in the following manner. Measurement units exist as systems of tradition based on experience, become standards for perceptions on existence, and are a means of expressing the connection of humans and ecology and the human activities of acquisition and processing. Such measurement units must be collected on a national scale and semantic networks should be deduced from multiple angles in connection with ecology and vocations.
Research on measurement units can be intensified through studies on industrial structures, occupational cycles, and agriculture and fishery. From this aspect, surveys on measurement units should not be conducted independently but together with surveys on trade, agriculture, and fishery. Further, observations should also be made on various forms of oral transmissions, proverbs and riddles, and idioms in which measurement units are used. Interest in traditional knowledge is growing and while it is solidifying its place as a part of a category designated as an intangible cultural property, it will be difficult for knowledge on measurement units to become an intangible cultural asset. However, through this, perceptions can spread that folklore exists as a phenomenon that is closely related to our lives at the base of intangible cultural assets that have granted meaning and value to formal sectors. The system of intangible cultural assets is a case of folklore utilization. Meanings can be simplified as value is granted by state-established systems. The important thing is that research must be conducted with interest in diverse folklore for such value to be granted. This is why the meanings of measurement units must be observed.
