슈만 그리고 상호매체성의 이슈들 (3): ≪다채로운 소품들≫ (Bunte Blätter, Op. 99)에서 나타나는 시각매체 ‘아라베스크’와 음악의 상호매체성 = Schumann and Issues of Intermediality (3): Intermediality of Visual Art “Arabesque” and Robert Schumann’s Bunte Blätter, Op. 99

While Robert Schumann (1810-1856) is widely known as a composer with literary leanings, he was also attracted to the visual arts. Previous examinations of Schumann’s music have emphasized his dexterous skill at translating literature’s characteristics into music, while neglecting the intermedial relations between his music and visual arts.
This paper traces the intermediality of visual art in Schumann’s Bunte Blätter, Op. 99 from the concept of ‘arabesque’. The work consists of 14 pieces, composed over fifteen years (1834-1849), yet abandoned by the composer until its publication in 1852; it was printed as a collection upon the suggestion of the publisher F. W. Arnold. This paper focuses on the medial characteristic of the ‘arabesque’, a visual medium that is patternized by intertwining plants and abstract curvilinear motifs. This paper then explores how the main characteristics of ‘arabesque’ such as ‘circularity’, ‘symmetry’, and ‘combination’ or ‘articulation’ of various motives and fragments were transformed into an auditory medium by Robert Schumann.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

슈만(Robert Schumann, 1810-1856)은 문학에 지대한 관심이 있었던 작곡가로 주로 알려져 있지만, 회화와 조각 등 시각예술에도 큰 관심을 가지고 있던 작곡가였다. 이전까지의 슈만 음악에 대한 논의가 슈만이 문학의 특징들을 청각적으로 변환해 내는 것에 탁월했던 점을 강조해 왔다면, 이제 슈만의 음악이 문학 이외의 다른 예술매체와 연관관계를 가지고 있는 것은 아닌지 살펴보아야 할 필요가 있다고 생각된다.
이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 슈만 음악이 지니고 있는 시각예술과의 상호매체성을 그의 피아노 작품인 ≪다채로운 소품들≫ (Bunte Blätter, Op. 99)을 통해 탐구해 본다. ≪다채로운 소품들≫은 출판업자의 제안에 따라 버려졌던 열네 곡을 모아 작품집으로 출판한 것인데, 이 다채로운 소품들은 1834년부터 1849년까지 15년에 걸쳐 작곡한 다양한 곡들을 담고 있어서 그의 음악을 관통하고 있었던 시각적 요소에 대한 관심을 확인하는 데 적합해 보인다.
다양한 시각매체들 중에서도 본 논문에서는 회화가 아닌 문양으로서 ‘아라베스크’의 특징에 집중한다. 이를 위해 19세기의 미학개념으로서의 ‘아라베스크’가 가지고 있는 의미를 함께 소개하면서도, 시각매체로서 ‘아라베스크’가 가지고 있는 주요 특징들인 ‘순환성’, ‘대칭성’, 그리고 다양한 파편들의 ‘절합’을 통한 ‘변형가능성’ 등이 슈만에 의해 어떻게 청각매체인 음악으로 전환되었는지를 주로 논한다.
