유럽의 다언어주의와 프랑스어의 전망 = A Study on The Multilingualism in EU and The Perspective of French Language

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to examine multi-lingualism in the EU and to discuss France's linguistic policy to explain the protection and expansion of the French language, which is being threatened by globalization, the hegemony of the English language, and increased European integration since the end of the 20th century.
This paper proceeds through two parts: a study on multi-lingualism in the EU and the perspective of the French language. Multi-lingualism in the EU, based on an equality principal and cultural diversity, promotes all member countries' official languages. The history of the French language policy is crossed by two contradictory legacies: first, the affirmation of universal principles based equality of citizens on the differentiation of origin (social, ethnic or race) and groups belonging to one part; and, secondly, the history of nation building and national identity, which imposed cultural and linguistic unification of heterogeneous populations. In another side, the threat posed today, globalization and the integration of France in the European political space instead of on the French scene international diplomacy led the French to give a speech in favor of defending linguistic and cultural diversity.
