Generally machine tool has a lot of blocks and contact surfaces for the reason of easiness to manufacture, repair and transport. Even though B.B.S(Building Block System) has lower static stiffness than solid system, B.B.S has advantages of vibration reduction and dynamic stability.
In this study, the column model was fixed to the bed by means of inserting thin metallic sheets or gilding on contact surface and obtained the interesting result-these bolted joints improve dynamic characteristics as well as static stiffness-.
The result of the model test was applied at the actual lathe by inserting 0.3mm metallic sheets between headstock and bed among the cycle of workpiece-headstock-bed-tool. Similar conclusion was obtained in the actual lathe, that is, dynamic characteristics of spindle system and surface roughness of workpiece are improved according to the hardness of inserted materials.
