The group that a person comes first in contact after his birth is a family. So a family is important. Park Wan-seo, a novelist, demonstrates some features of various families in our society through her work. In this study, I study an aspects of the families in Park Wan-seo′s novel.
We experienced the change of society caused by the war and the industrialization. The concept of the family, therefore, is different from that in the past and the importance of the family remarkably degrades in comparison with that in the past. Some families of today seem to be dissolved. In chapter 2, I research into the aspects of the family dissolution.
The followings are the reasons why the families are dissolved:
Firstly, a cause of the family dissolution is wars. The family dissolution occurs when some of family members die or are separated in wartime and it also takes place when some family members who are left after the war do not overcome the agony of losing their family members and do not live in unity.
Secondly, one of the reasons causing it is related to industrialization. The industrialization in Korea generated materialism, egoism and snobbish characteristic. The problems of the industrialization took place in the families and dissolved them. Family members should love and understand one another. In industrialized society, family members, however, are referred to material tools by themselves. Some families of today in our society, therefore, have split up.
Lastly, some families have been dissolved by the conflict of traditional values. Because our society has been dominated by patriarchal ideology for many years. In our society, it is considered that men predominate. Because of this, boy preference ideology, predominance of men ideology and masculine predominance are present in our society. However, women claim the equality of both sexes with social consciousness advancement, economic growth and education Which have been partly done by them. They also try to free themselves from patriarchal ideology. Consequently, some troubles have arisen among the family members. In the result, the families have been dissolved because the conflict between man and woman has not been solved.
Like this, some families of our society have been dissolved. On the other hand, some other families have been recovered with their love. Some people have tried to form other family-like organizations so as to make up non-family connection communities. This phenomenon is well-reflected in Park's work. Park has emphasized that the love of a couple is extremely important for family harmony.
When the love of a couple is broken, the family faces a crisis. On the contrary, a family lives in perfect harmony when the couple love and trust each other.
Park tells that it can be possible that a family is able to be born by people who truly love one another in spite of non-family connection. For this, the most important thing is love.
There is a lack of understanding and love among dissolved family members. For that reason, one another's love and trust are needed in order to restore the family or form a new family.
