Consider a system that is made up of multiple components connected in a series. In this case, the failure of the whole system is caused by the earliest failure of any of the components, which is commonly referred to as competing failure mode. It is also called competing risk model in the literature. Many analysis tools such as ReliaSoft have the CFM method but it is not a good fit, compared to the method of EM algorithm for CFM. In this paper, we introduce Competing Failure Mode using the EM algorithm. We applied to real data example with three failure modes in order to estimate the shape and scale parameters of the system. In addition, reliability measures (reliability, characteristic life) are compared with ReliaSofts results. The proposed method can be easily implemented using the developed R program.
