아리스토텔레스의 대윤리학(Magna Moralia)에 나타난 외적 좋음과 행복에 관하여 = External Goods and Happiness in Aristotle’s Magna Moralia

The aim of this paper is to define the external goods and the happiness in Aristotle’s Magna Moralia. Aristotle’s theory of happiness is the main topic not only in the ancient philosophy, but also in modern psychology, psychiatry, and so on. Socrates and Plato maintain a virtue-based concept of happiness that happiness is the highest aim of our lives and the virtues are the essence to attain it. Aristotle, however, claims that happiness requires the external goods, such as friendship, wealth, health, beautiful appearance, good birth, etc. I focus on the external goods in Aristotle’s Magna Moralia which seems to add something valuable and interesting arguments. In the Magna Moralia for the citizens of the science of politics, the external goods are concerned in the capacities (dynamis) for they are what the virtuous man can use well and the base man badly. They are external and are not without luck which is irrational nature. Happiness, therefore, is the best and the complete we are looking for, from many goods including some in the soul, like virtues; some in the body, like health, beauty; and some outside, wealth, rule, honor, and anything else of the sort.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 아리스토텔레스 󰡔대윤리학󰡕에서 외적 좋음과 행복의 관계를 규명하는데 있다. 아리스토텔레스 윤리학의 핵심이론인 ‘행복론’은 고대 그리스뿐 아니라 오늘 날에도 철학뿐 아니라, 심리학, 정신의학 등 여러 분야에서 자주 등장하는 관심 주제이기도 하다. 소크라테스, 플라톤은 행복이야말로 인간의 최고선이며, 다름 아닌 덕과 같거나 덕과 관련이 있다고 주장하지만, 아리스토텔레스는 행복이 덕으로만 충분하지 않다고 생각했다. 본 연구는 외적 좋음과 행복에 대한 여러 가지 논의들 중에 특별히 아리스토텔레스의 다뤄지지 않은 윤리학 작품인 󰡔대윤리학󰡕에서 보충될 수 있는 설명을 찾고자 한다. 공동체를 위한 정치학적 좋음을 탐구하는 󰡔대윤리학󰡕에서 외적 좋음은 가능태적인 좋음으로 덕의 훌륭한 활동을 위한 능력이나 힘으로서 좋은 것이 되며, 우리 밖에 있는 것으로 비이성적 본성인 운에 의해 발생한다. 그리고 결국 행복이란 영혼의 좋음(덕)과, 몸의 좋음(건강, 외모 등), 그리고 외적 좋음인 돈이나 권력, 가문 등을 모두 포함한 것으로 이는 인간적인 좋음인 동시에 우리 공동체가 향해갈 목표이기도 하다.
