This study investigated the immediate effects of deep transverse friction massage applied to intercostal muscles on respiratory function and thoracic cage expansion in healthy adults. Fifty healthy participants in their twenties were included. Respiratory function was assessed before and after intervention by measuring forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, peak expiratory flow (PEF), vital capacity (VC), and expiratory reserve volume (ERV) using the Pony FX system. Thoracic expansion during inspiration and expiration was evaluated using a chest circumference test. Pre-post differences were analyzed using paired t-tests. After the intervention, significant increases were observed in FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, PEF, VC, and thoracic expansion during inspiration (p < .05). On the other hand, ERV and thoracic expansion during expiration showed no significant change (p > .05). These results indicate that deep transverse friction massage of intercostal muscles enhances thoracic mobility and respiratory muscle function by improving soft tissue flexibility, and suggest this intervention may be effective for improving thoracic mobility, respiratory function, and breathing efficiency.
