Currently, about 500,000 Goryeoins 117) live in the former Soviet Union countries, of which 185,000 Koreans live in Uzbekistan (2013), approximately 153,000 Koreans live in Russia (2010), 17,000 Koreans live in Kyrgyzstan (2009), and about 100,000 Koreans live in Kazakhstan (2009). I decided to start this thesis work, because I was interested in when and how the Korean diaspora was formed in the former Soviet Union countries and I would like to study their lives afterwards. Therefore, the keywords that became the core of this thesis are as follows.
The first keyword key point is the history of the Korean diaspora. After examining a number of previous studies and historical documents, both historical processes the first Korean migration to the Russian Empire and the second one to Central Asia are summarized. The period of history which is analyzed in the study starts from the late 19th century and finishes by the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The second key point is the entrepreneurial mindset of Goryeoins. “Gobonjil” is a unique agricultural system invented by Goryeo people in the Soviet territory, was mostly developed in the 1930s-60s and played an important role in the Korean overseas’ life. I would like to present an opinion that they had the entrepreneurial mindset by developing “Gobonjil” agricultural system. In order to prove this argument, first of all the identity of “Gobonjil” is researched in detail, and after analyzing the concept of “entrepreneurship” closely, the logical conclusion is made.
The third key point is a comparison between Goryeoins farming method of “Gobonjil” and other agricultural systems. To compare the “Gobonjil” with different examples agricultural systems in the Soviet Union, North Korea, and Israel are selected. The period of history which is analyzed in the study includes information from the time period of 1910-1990ss. The data for this research obtained from historical documents stored in the National Library of Russia, Korea and Israel, previous studies, statistics, survey data, reports, newspapers, etc.
