Gapyeong is located in the center of Korea Peninsula and borders Gyeonggi Province and Gangwon Province. Historically, Gapyeong is increasingly correlated with both provinces after it belonged to Gyounggi Province from Gangwon Province. Geographycally, it is characterized as mountain area located on the edge of Backdudaegan. This paper studied on the aspects of folk songs by analyzing folk songs according to the agricultural practice resulted from geographical features in Gapyeong. The character of folk songs in Gapyeong is that “Plowing Song” was much sung. There widely investigated “Song of Cattle Droving” by the geographical influence, which also appear in Hongcheon and Chuncheon. For the ceremony, “Bier Song” was much transmitted. For the amusement, both Gyounggi and Ganwon folk songs are investigated. There are few folk song like Arari though popular Gyeonggi folk songs are sung over the nation. Especially, the more recent materials they are the more popular songs such as noraegarak, changbu taryeong there are.
This study aims to compare folk songs in Gapyeong with those in other areas in order to examine its connection with other songs. Gapyeong is northwestern area of ‘Danheorisori’, and southwestern of ‘Minari’ according to comparison “Nonmaeneun-sori” which is common and distinctive. It is convinced through “Nonmaeneum-sori” that Gapyeong was a border between Gyeonggu and Gangwon historically, geographically and culturally. This paper proves that Gapyeong which is in Minari-sphere among five-farm-song-circle is positioned in important status.
