This study explored the appropriate approach to guide proper dietary habits and health practices among college students through the general education course on ‘Dietary Life and Health.’ The study involved 120 male and female college students in the Ulsan region who were enrolled in the ‘Dietary Life and Health’ general education course. The research used a qualitative research method with an open-ended, self-reported questionnaire during the first week of the course.
The survey results showed that the health problems perceived by college students included irregular daily patterns, improper eating behaviors, weight issues, stress, and lack of exercise. The reasons for consuming breakfast included hunger and supporting brain activity for academic studies.
The reasons for skipping breakfast included oversleeping, lack of appetite, feeling lazy, diet through fasting, and physical discomfort after breakfast. The participants’ motivation for exercise included managing body weight and enhancing physical performance and physique. The reasons for not exercising included lack of motivation, inconvenience, and time constraints from the academic schedule. This study suggests that an efficiently conducted ‘Dietary Life and Health’ course is essential for addressing the problems identified in college students’ dietary habits and health. Understanding students’ dietary habits and health behaviors and providing appropriate information and education should be prioritized to encourage improvements in students’ dietary habits and health.
