방탄소년단 콘텐츠 팬자막의 번역 전략

국문 초록 (Abstract)

번역은 ‘문화 간 이동’을 전제한다. 이동의 방향은 권력의 방향과 일치한다. 문화간 이동에 대한 학문적 접근은 전 세계로 뻗어나가는 K-POP의 영향력으로 인해 새로운 전기를 맞이하고 있다. 한국어로 된 영상이 업로드되는 순간 팬번역자들은 자발적으로 번역 작업에 돌입하며, 팬덤 내에서 자막 번역을 필요로 하는 동료 팬들이 함께 영상을 즐길 수 있도록 자막을 추가한 영상들을 재생산해낸다. 팬번역자는 문화를 전달해주는 매개자로서의 자신의 정체성을 드러내며 번역이 불가능한 요소 중 시청자 층에게 중요하다고 판단되는 정보를 인지하고 적극적 개입을 마다하지 않는다. 본고는 방탄소년단 팬덤 자막 번역이 기존에 제시된 영상 번역에 사용된 전력과는 다른 양상을 보이는 것을 증명하고 그 번역 전략의 특수성을 유형화하고자 한다. 다시 말해, 한국어가 링구아 프랑카인 K-POP 그룹의 해외 팬덤 내에서 원천어인 한국어가 도착어 문화에 자리잡은 현상을 실제 팬자막 번역 콘텐츠를 통해 증명하고자 한다. 유튜브 등에서 공유되는 영상의 팬자막을 분석하여 그 번역 전략을 유형화하고 그러한 전략이 나타난 배경을 분석하여 번역과 한류 관련 콘텐츠의 번역과 관련 현상을 연구하는 데 유용한 방향을 제시하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Translation implies "intercultural movement." The direction of movement is the same as the direction of power. Because of the global influence of K-pop, the academic approach to intercultural movement is entering a new era. As soon as the video in Korean is uploaded, fan translators volunteer to begin the translation work, quenching the thirst of fellow fans within the fandom for translated subtitles. Fan translators reveal their identity as cultural mediators, recognizing information that cannot be translated and judging it to be important to the audience, and not being afraid to actively intervene.
This study aims to show that BTS fandom subtitle translation follows a distinct pattern from previously published video translation power, as well as to classify the uniqueness of its translation strategy. In other words, through actual fan subtitle translation content, this study intends to demonstrate that Korean, the source language, is established in the foreign language culture within the overseas fandom of the K-pop group that shares Korean as lingua franca.
Subtitle data generated by the BTS fandom is analyzed to this end. We would like to suggest useful directions for studying translation and related phenomena of Korean Wave-related content by analyzing fan subtitles of videos shared on YouTube, categorizing their translation strategies, and analyzing the background of such strategies.
