Since the antigenicity of spermatozoa in heterologous species was discovered by Landsteiner and independently by Metchnikoff as early as 1899, the nature of antigenicity of spermatozoa and seminal plasma was studied by many investigators from various, mainly mammalian, species. The majority of these investigators have involved the antifertility aspects, or contraceptive potential, and several investigators have involved the fertility aspects, or therapeutic potential of unexplained infertility. However, no effort was made to clarity the immunohistologic change which might occur in the level of mucosa by the immunologic reaction between antiseminal antibody excreated through the cervical mocosa and ejaculated seminal antigen deposited in the region.
This report described an attempt to induce histologic change in the uterine cervix by repeated infusion of human seminal antigen into the rabbit vagina which was previously immunized with identical pooled human seminal antigen from blood group O.
The results obtained are summarized as following:
1. Sperm agglutinin was identified in the uterine secreta from all of rabbits which were previously immunized by semen antigen.
2. Sperm agglutinin titers in the uterine secreta were lower than that of sera.
3. By repeated intravaginal infusion of semen antigen to immunized rabbits, it was possible to induce uterine cervical tissue reaction.
4. The degree of tissue reaction in rabbits immunized. by semen suspension revealed marked reaction in 3 cases, moderate reaction in 2 cases, minimal reaction in 1 case and no significant reaction in 2 cases.
5. The degree of tissue reaction in rabbits immunized by semen suspension with Freund's complete adjuvant revealed marked reaction in 3 cases, moderate reaction in 3 cases and minimal reaction ia 2 eases.
6. The tissue reaction was that of chronic or subacute nonspecific inflammatory change.
7. This experimental cervicitis in rabbit induced by antigenicity of semen seems to be mediated by immune reaction.
