This study deals with English idioms. A figurative sense of English idioms can be semantically analyzed on the basis of conceptual metaphor and metonomy. But the semantic view of idioms has a limitation. Idioms are various in forms and types and a central part of English. However their complexities cause difficulties in their proper use for EFL learners. This thesis shows the characteristics and understandings of English idioms by analyzing them and suggest directions to effectively learn them under EFL conditions.
In chapter 2, we studied the definition, the generation, and the classifications of English idioms to reveal the concept of them. In chapter 3, the characteristics of idioms are discussed semantically, lexically and sociolinguistically in turn. Their sociolinguistic characteristics are institutionsalization and popularity.
Idioms can be classified in many ways due to their complexity. Idioms are classified by their structures, function, and the rate of idiomaticity. The conventional view of an idiom is an expression which becomes a dead metaphor and then finally becomes an idiom or acquires a new meaning from the original meaning. The transparency is determined when we can infer the figurative meaning by the literal meaning of the components. In chapter 4, the analysis of high school text suggests ways of understanding idioms for student.
In conclusion, I would like to make a suggestion for creative teaching of English idiomatic expressions. Teachers should teach student many things about the target language and communicative skills. Also, show them written style from spoken English through many practical patterns in a various context. While, paying attention to the origin of idiomatic expressions.
