This study examines L2 learners`` knowledge of formulaic sequences frequently used in academic writing in English. Twenty-six undergraduate students in a Korean university were tested on their productive and receptive knowledge of 20 formulaic sequences. The results of the present study revealed that the group of L2 learners tested on their receptive knowledge of formulaic sequences used in academic writing obtained higher scores than the group of L2 learners whose productive knowledge was tested. Furthermore, a correlation analysis showed that the L2 learners`` knowledge of the formulaic sequences were not significantly associated with their English proficiency in general. The results of this study suggest that L2 learners`` lack of productive knowledge of formulaic sequences may be one of the reasons underlying ``non-native-like`` writing in English.
