아키야마 요(秋山 陽)의 작품에 관한 연구 = A Study of Works by Akiyama Yo - Focusing on the Black Ceramic Works -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 일본의 현대공예와 현대미술의 동향 안에서 가장 영향력 있는 도예가 그룹인 소데이샤(走泥社)의 일원이자 대형화된 설치작품 조각가로도 알려진 아키야마 요의 흑도 작품에 관한 연구이다. 소데이샤는 교토(京都)를 중심으로 활동한 전위적인 그룹으로 1948년부터 98년 해산되기 전 까지 전통공예와 미술의 벽을 허물며 일본현대도예의 기반이 되어주었다. 이들이 선보인 실험방식 중에서 야기 가즈오(八木一夫)의 오브제 야키로 확장하며 다양한 조형언어를 지닌 현대미술의 한 장르로 인정받는데 기여한다. 야기가 작품제작에 사용하였던 흑도기법은 현대도예작가인 아키야마의 흑도로 제작된 설치도예 작품에서 심화되어 나타난다. 아키야마는 야기의 급진적인 도자기와 순수미술가들의 사상 등을 토대로 작품의 개념, 크기 및 형태를 통합하여 포스트모더니즘의 대형 추상조각을 연상시키는 흑도를 제시한다. 작가의 작품 분석 시 살펴볼 사항은 창의적 표현을 가능하게 한 재료인 흙과 흑도 제작기술이다. 작가는 물레성형기법에서 발전된 형태, 즉 오브제인 흑도를 공간에 설치하여 보여주는데, 이와 같은 작품사례는 미술계에 입체조형을 표현하는 방식으로서 클레이워크(Claywork)가 지닌 가능성을 환기시킨다. 그의 작품은 주제, 소성방법 및 시기별로 <Untitled> · <Peneplain> · <Oscillation> · <Pho> · <Zone> ·<Geological Age> · <Metavoid> · <Heterophony> · <Incubation> 등의 연작으로 나뉜다. 전 세계의 주요 공공 및 사설 컬렉션에서 대형설치를 선보인 그는 미술과 공예, 전통과 현대, 그리고 조각과 도자기를 재해석한다. 작가는 독특한 작가주의를 발산해 현대미술 작품 안에서 공존하는 이러한 분류된 개념들의 경계를 흐리게 만들고 흑도작품을 완성한다. 현재 아키야마의 비 기능적이며 실험적인 세라믹 오브제들은 전통적인 도예를 반영하고 공예의 위상을 현대적으로 부각시켰다고 평가된다. 결론적으로 아키야마의 도자조각에 관한 연구는 독자적인 작품성향과 함께 일본의 조형도자의 흐름과 맥락을 살펴볼 수 있는 계기라 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis is a study on the works of Akiyama Yo, a contemporary ceramic artist of large-scale installation works and a member of Sodeisha. Sodeisha is one of the most influential avant-garde pottery group in the trend of modern craft and contemporary art in Japan which started in Kyoto. It was the foundation of modern ceramics in Japan which caused to tear down the wall of traditional crafts and art during the periods between 1948 to 1998. Among the experimental methods introduced by Sodeisha, the model-oriented works of Yagi Kazuo, the leader of Sodeisha, have extended the trend of Japanese ceramic art from a traditional vessel to a new expression of kiln-fired objects by using a variety of formative languages. The black firing technique used in producing Yagi’s works is deepened in the installation ceramic works produced by the black pottery of Akiyama. Based on the radical ceramics of Yagi’s and the ideas of other fine artists, Akiyama presents black ceramics which is incorporate reminiscing elements of postmodernism: concept, size and form of the work. The factors that will be looked up in the analysis of the artist’s works are the clay and technique of creating black ceramics, which enabled artist’s creative expression. Akiyama shows works of black ceramics, developed from wheel technique, by placing it in the exhibition space. Such a case of work is a ways of expressing three dimensional molding which inspires the possibilities of claywork. His series of works are divided into <Untitled>, <Peneplain>, <Oscillation>, <Pho>, <Zone>, <Geological Age>, <Metavoid>, <Heterophony>, and <Incubation> by their themes, methods, and periods. Presenting large installations in major public and private collections around the world, he reinterpreted arts and crafts, tradition and modernity, and sculpture and ceramics. The artist has blurred the boundaries of these classified concepts that coexist in contemporary art by expressing unique artistic intentions. It is estimated that his non-functional and experimental ceramic objects reflect traditional ceramics and enhance the status of modern crafts. In conclusion, studies on the ceramic sculpture of Akiyama can be considered an opportunity to look at the flow and context of the Japanese formative artist, as well as the original works.
