플라톤의 역사 경험과 철학의 자기이해 = 『정치가』를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

헤시오도스의 금속 신화에 따르면 역사는 점진적인 퇴보이다. 그에 따르면 가장 먼 과거는 현재의 이상향이다. 이에 반해 소피스트들은 인간의 역사를 진보의 과정으로 파악하고자 한다. 그들은 특히 기술의 발견을 역사 진보의 출발점으로 간주한다. 플라톤이 역사를 바라보는 관점과 태도는 이전 전통적인 견해들의 단순성을 뛰어넘고 있다. 플라톤이 볼 때 ‘먼 과거’는 이상향으로만 남는 것은 아니다. 인간의 문명사는 ‘보다 나은것’을 찾아가는 길이기는 하지만, 그 길에는 꼭 진보만이 있었던 것은 아니다. 인간의 문명사는 양가적(兩價的)이다. 인간의 문명사는 기술 발전과 함께 문명의 자기 파괴 그리고 도덕적 타락을 가져온다. 그렇지만 문명의 끝은 학문적 인식 능력의 증가, 무엇보다도 철학의 자기의식을 가능하게 한다. 그런 점에서 인간 역사는 상승이자 동시에 하강이다. 인간 역사의 양가성은 역사의 모든 부분들에서 확인된다. 크로노스 치세라는 ‘저쪽’ 역사에도, 대홍수 직후 초기 인류 역사에도 양면성은 자리 잡고 있다. 지금 시대도 양면적이지만, 먼 과거도 양면적이다. 철학을 한다는 것은 역사의 양가성을 목도하는 것을 포함한다. 철학은 역사의 양가성 경험을 통해 자기 자신을 의식한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

According to the myth of Hesiod’s Metal, history is a gradual degeneration. Based on this myth, the remotest past represents an ideal for the present time. On the contrary, the Sophists would like to regarded the history of human being as progress. They considered the invention of technology to be a starting point for the progress of history. However, Plato’s viewpoint and attitude towards history overcomes previous traditional opinions. According to Plato, ‘the remote past’ does not remain only an ideal. Indeed, the history of civilization by humankind may be a route for seeking a better thing, but it is not the case that only progress occupies this route. The history of civilization by humankind is ambivalent. The history of civilization brings the self?destruction of civilization and moral corruption, as well as technical development. However, the end of civilization enables an increase of scientific understanding, especially self?awareness of philosophy. In this regard, human history is both on an ascent and on a descent. This ambivalence can be confirmed in all parts of history. The ambivalence is seated in the history ‘over there’, i.e. in that of Cronus’s reign, and furthermore in that of primitive human society immediately after the Great Flood. This age now is ambivalent, and yet the remote past is so. To do philosophy includes contemplating the ambivalence of history. Philosophy makes awareness of herself through an experience of the ambivalence of history.
