The Study of Pagan Sectarianism in EarlyRussian Modernism:
A Focus on the Problem of Primitivism and Poetics of Vseedinstvo

Russian modernism, the focus of sectarianism was none other than the archaism embedded in its language in the early twentieth century. The twentieth century was characterized as a period not only with its ambitions to conquer and challenge, but also highlight an era of separation and crisis. Sectarianism emerged as a unitary artistic model which sought to overcome this separation and crisis through its use of linguistic expressions to emphasize notions of archaic unison such as those which consolidated the body with the mind, words with action, and signifi with signifiant. Within the poetry of the Russian modernist movement, sectarianism became classified as a form of "unison poetry," which focused on unity and equality and revolved around the concepts of myth-poetry symbolism and its sectarian motifs and language appeared frequently in the works of Russian modernists. Pagan sectarianism showed a keen interest in adopting not only the second phase of myth- poetic symbolism, a concept rooted in unison poetry, but also in the grotesque (cannibalism, the third phase of symbolism, became a main focus of sectarian language and world view, and was characterized by the rejection of a logical thought and causality), which provided ample themes from psychic and mysterious arcane religions.
Sectarianism became an important matter even after the post- symbolism of Russian modernism. Futurism later on developed to reject the preceding cultural, religious, and philosophical themes of symbolism which were pursued by only a handful of social elites; moreover, through futurism's artistic language, it used these themes as popular subjects for parody. Furthermore, futurism's disparaging of the values of symbolism helped to actively develop sectarian neo-primitive motifs and forms while it conserved archaic linguistic values at the same time.
Sectarianism became a way to resolve the problems arisen from the polarization that characterized the epoch of Russian modernism in the early twentieth century. Sectarianism's pursuit of the archaic focused on the notions of discontinuity and breakage and took on the role to unify the several sects existing within many heterogeneousstyles, groups, and genres of modernism keenly competing with one another but not sharing a common philosophical or aesthetic value. Therefore the use of sectarian motifs and forms became an important factor in combining the post-symbolic avant-garde of the 1910's through 1920's with the symbolism poets who pursued ethnic motifs and showed interest in the lower classes.
Emphasis can be given on the trial of the Russian literature to establish sectarianism within their literature to resolve the serious social problems arisen from separation and polarization. This study concentrates on the literature of Russian modernism and myth- poetic symbolism, which constructed the "silver-age" of Russian literature and stimulated the revival of the superiority of Russian literature following Russian realism of the nineteenth century. and It also focuses on its establishment as a way to resolve polarization through the use of unison poetry. By looking into the hundred years of Russian literature from the beginnings to the ends of the twentieth century, which can also be translated into the rise and fall of the communist regime, this study will enhance the understanding of the often complex world of Russian modernism. Also it will ease the understanding of the polarized society of Russia in the present.

20세기 초 러시아 모더니즘에 나타난 이교적 분파주의: 원시주의와 합일의 시학을 중심으로

20세기 초 러시아 모더니즘에서 분파주의에 대한 관심은 무엇보다 분파주의 언어 안에 잔재돼 있는 고대성(archaism)으로 인한 것이었다. 영-몸, 말-행위, 기의-기표 등이 분리되지 않고 고대의 합일의 상태를 유지하고 있던 분파주의의 언어와 그 세계관은 전복과 새로운 도전의 시기임과 동시에 분열과 위기의 시기이기도 했던 20세기 들어와 이 분열을 극복할 수 있는 성공적인 합일의 예술 모델의 하나로 제시된다. 특히 분파주의에 대한 관심은 특히 러시아 모더니즘 시학 내에서 ‘통합’, ‘동질성’을 특징으로 하는 ‘합일의 시학’을 지향하던 신화시학적 상징주의(myth-poetic symbolism)를 중심으로 분파주의 모티브나 언어를 그들에 작품 속에 자주 차용하는 형태로 나타났다. 물론 합일의 시학에 기초한 2기 신화시학적 상징주의뿐만이 아닌 그로테스크-카니발적 3기 상징주의 또한 분파주의의 언어와 세계관에 지대한 관심을 보였는데, 논리적 사고와 인과율의 부정에 기초하고 있는 상징주의는 심령학적이고 신비스런 秘敎적 소재를 풍부하게 담고 있는 이교적 분파주의로의 끌림은 당연한 것이었다.
러시아 모더니즘에서 분파주의는 포스트 상징주의에서도 또한 중요한 소재로 작용했다. 특별히 미래주의(futurism)가 극복해야할 대상으로 여겼던 선행하는 시학으로서의 상징주의가 갖는 소수의 엘리트 문화적이며 종교-철학적인 요소들은 미래주의자들에게는 거부해야할 일차적 대상이 됨과 동시에 패러디할 수 있는 예술 언어의 좋은 소재감이 되었다. 이러한 미래주의에 의한 상징주의 시학에 대한 가치 폄하는 그 언어에서 고대성을 간직하고 있는 분파주의의 신원시주의(neo-primitivism)적 모티브와 형식의 수용을 통해 활발하게 이루어졌던 것이다.
이렇게 20세기 초 러시아 모더니즘에서 시대적 양극화 문제를 해결하는 한 방법으로서 관심을 모은 고대성의 추구에 기초하고 있는 분파주의에 대한 관심은 불연속과 단절의 사고를 그 특성으로 하고, 공통된 철학사상이나 미학관이 부재하며, 서로 이질적이고 경쟁적인 관계에 있는 여러 스타일, 여러 그룹, 여러 장르가 존재하는 모더니즘 내의 다양한 유파를 하나로 모우는 역할을 했다. 즉 러시아 모더니즘 작품들에서 전반적으로 나타나는 분파주의 모티브나 형식의 차용은 미래주의를 비롯한 1910~20년대의 포스트상징주의적인 아방가르드와 민중의 하위문화에 관심을 많이 갖고 민속적 모티브를 선호했던 상징주의 경향의 시인들을 결합시키는 중요한 요인로 작용했던 것이다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 러시아 문학사에서 은세기라 부를 정도로 19세기 러시아 사실주의 문학에 이어 또 한번의 러시아 문학의 부흥을 가져왔던 20세기 모더니즘 문학에서, 특히 합일의 시학을 통해 신화시학적 상징주의가 이 시기 러시아 사회에서 극렬하게 문제시 되었던 분열과 양극화의 현상을 해결하려하려던 시도를 그들의 문학작품 내에서 이뤄졌던 분파주의 차용을 통한 예에서 알아보았다. 이러한 연구는 난해한 러시아 모더니즘 시학을 이해하는데 도움이 될 뿐만이 아니라, 100년이 흐른 지금 또 다시 세기말에서 세기 초로 넘어오면서 공산주의 사회가 무너지고 극심한 분열과 양극화의 문제를 겪고 있는 오늘 날의 러시아 사회를 이해하는데도 무척 유용한
