옻칠 협탁의 연구 = A Study on the Ottchil Side Table

In a modern society that puts a great value on environment friendly, lacquered furniture is invaluable. Besides, as living standard has improved as a result of economic growth, there is a growing demand among modern people for the housing environment that reflects their characters, provides more comport and becomes a space of their own that preserves their privacy.
Therefore, the researcher created and researched a lacquered side table among various types of furniture, which is an important factor of the housing environment often used by us. In an attempt to create Korea's peculiar traditional beauty that goes well with Western culture, the researcher created the side table using traditional material, lacquer.
This study was conducted in the following way. First, the concept, kinds and features of side table were examined theoretically. Through research on lacquered side tables, various expression techniques involving lacquer were explored and experimented and then applied to art works.
Second, with regard to the design of lacquered side table, the shape of hexahedron was transformed, combined or repeatedly arranged to create various types of side table. Besides, five colors which represent the five directions and well reflect Korean sentiments were used to apply color to the side able, making the table look more comfortable and friendly.
Third, although the researcher applied lacquering techniques, he tried to well express the peculiar texture and color which can be created only by lacquering.
In a world where globalization is so pervasive that traditional colors and patterns often looked strange, the research have combined a traditional material, lacquer, and modern design. Lacquered works turned out to have far better texture and colors than works created using other painting materials. In addition, the distortion of furniture and lacquer adhesion failure significantly decreased when furniture made of plywood was lacquered than when furniture was made of other types of wood.
In conclusion, this study tried to show we can create modern style furniture using our traditional materials. In addition, it tried to open a new chapter in the housing culture by raising the value of life with the use of side table which is both functional and decorative.
