도시불평등과 기회의 지리 = Urban Inequality and Geography of Opportunity

국문 초록 (Abstract)

전 세계적으로 불평등이 심화됨에 따라 도시 차원의 불평등 현실을 엄밀하게 파악하기 위한 학문적 노력 또한 다각도로 이뤄지고 있는데, 그중에서도 불평등 문제를 공간적 차원에서 보다 세밀하게 접근하는 데 유용한 개념 중 하나로 기회의 지리(Geography of Opportunity) 를 꼽을 수 있다. 1990년대 중반에 제안된 이 개념은 서구에서 인종과 계급에 따른 공간적 분리(segregation)의 문제를 논의하는 데 있어 상당히 유의미한 개념으로 주목을 받았다. 그러나 우리 현실에서는 이 개념에 대한 이론적 논의와 경험적 논의 모두 부족한 실정이다. 이 논문에서는 기회의 지리에 대한 서구 중심의 기존 논의를 살펴보고, 우리의 현실을해석하는 데 있어 이 개념의 적실성 여부를 비판적으로 탐색해 보고자 한다. 즉, 서구의 개념을 기계적으로 우리의 현실에 적용하는 것을 경계하고, 시공간적으로 빠르게 변화하는현실을 해석하는 데 있어 이 개념의 한계와 가능성에 대해 함께 논의하고자 한다. 이 연구에서는 도시 내 공간적 불평등의 심화 현상의 구체적 양상과 함의를 파악하기 위해 기회의 지리 개념에 주목할 필요가 있다고 주장한다.
