공공공간의 다중적 공공성: 서울광장의 사용허가 제도 논란을 중심으로 = Multiplicity of publicness: A case study of the public dispute around Seoul Square

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to broaden understanding of the dynamic and multiple urban space by tracking the debates on the use of Seoul Square over time.
To do this, various sources such as TV, newspapers and magazines, documents published by involved organizations, and academic article were used to track the debate from 2009 to 2022. In the analysis process, Actor-Network Theory was a basic approach and for describing the changes of networks the program/anti-program framework (Akrich & Latour, 1992) was applied. The notable aspects in the Seoul Square controversy through the analysis are as follows. First, different interpretations of publicness differentiate the actual accessibility to the space.
Second, the actants which are not directly related to the publicness debate itself, such as political or religious actant, influenced the beginning, continuation, or end of the controversy. Third, the representing aspect of Seoul Square had the effect of expanding the controversy network. Through this, the study argues that the publicness of Seoul Square is not single but plural and is a changeable entity through time and understanding the changing aspect of urban space could provide alternative insight on our cities.
