Purpose: Based on the previous studies reporting in Korea the levels of primary school students’ character were higher than the ones of secondary school students’, this study explored the reasons why the levels of their character are different.
Design/methodology/data/approach: In this study, we conducted a survey for primary and secondary school students by using stratified clustering random sampling. To explore factors which influence students’ character, we used the hierarchical linear modeling including two levels(individual and school level).
Findings/Results: This study showed that primary school students’ levels of character were higher than secondary school students’, this is that among primary school students’ relationship with parents and with teachers, as well as satisfaction with their life and positive emotions were high. Also, primary school students’ relationship with parents and with teachers, and happiness affected primary school students’ character more than secondary school students’. This findings indicate that happiness is related to levels of character.
Value: This study implies that as the grade level increases, it is important that reasons of lower levels of students’ character should be explored. Also, this study suggests that further research needs to explore factors that influence levels of students’ character.
