This paper presents the energy consumption of a mid-size electric vehicle (EV) with respect to various driving motors as well as the gear ratio for its drive system. It is essential to analyze the vehicle system in order to choose the proper component size meeting the target performance in the early stages of EV technology development. In this study, the minimum size of the electric driving motor is evaluated based on vehicle dynamics, which is able to satisfy the maximum speed, the grade ability and acceleration performance. And backward-looking simulation for prediction of the energy consumption of the vehicle is carried out through selection of three candidates for the driving motor and gear ratio. The results show that the EV with an 80kW electric motor and 2-speed transmission is better than other systems in terms of vehicle efficiency with meeting the target performance.
