Among veterinary medicine, it is reported that zoletil has great possibilities of abuse and misuse. This research investigates domestic and foreign using of zoletil, and covers various foreign regulations on veterinary medicine. And this research estimates drug dependence through the experiment on laboratory animals with veterinary anesthetic drug. In this research, we can support the appropriate policy for preventing misuse and abuse of veterinary anesthetic drug and protecting vulnerable members. We investigated published papers and articles regarding dependence on animal anesthetics. To understand the state of using veterinary anesthetic drug, we conduct a survey for nation's small anmial hospitals and large animal hospitals and for KALAS members about the use of zoletil, other veterinary anesthetic drug and sedative. As a result of survey, the management on anesthetic drugs are well unified in Korea but it is difficult to find exact route of drug purchasing because route of drug purchasing is mixed with wholesale stores and retail stores. Many veterinarians worry about that general people can also obtain veterinary drugs including anesthetic drugs. In contrast, zoletil is included in animal anesthetics and it requires prescription of veterinarian for utilization of zoletil. In some countries, it is not allowed to use zoletil, because it is not registered into medicine. In Korea, it is easy for people to access zoletil, therefore it has great possibility to misuse and abuse zoletil. Like other advanced countries, the govermental regulation, practice and exact information are required in Korea. We conduct researches for the amount of production(import) and selling a year item by item. The amount of selling zoletil from wholesale is 3 times more than the amount of zoletil that has sold from importing company to hospital. It was impossible to find how it is sold after wholesale. We tried to recognize whether the use of zoletil (tiletamin + zolazepam) that is used as the veterinary anesthetic agent nowadays can induce psychologic dependence and physiologic dependence through the animal experiment. For the estimation to psychologic dependence on veterinary anesthetic agent in laboratory animal, we conduct "Self administration" and "Conditionde Place Preference" test And for the estimation to physiologic dependence on veterinary anesthetic agent, we examine locomotor activity, exercise activity and abnormal behavior in a cross maze after drug apply and withdraw. We proved experimentally dependence on veterinary anesthetic agent. This research could be used as the scientific data for managing misuse and abuse of veterinary anesthetic. It can be utilized for dependence research on similar compounds by dependence investigation on zolitil and for establishment of standard estimation system about triggering dependence by anesthetic drugs.
