알도 반 에이크의 헤이그 로마 가톨릭 교회에 발현된 쌍자현상에 관한 연구 = Examining the Twin-phenomenon manifested in the Roman Catholic Church in The Hague designed by Aldo van Eyck

국문 초록 (Abstract)

네덜란드 건축가 알도 반 에이크는 인간의 원초적인 특징에 관심을 가지고 원시 문명 연구를 통해‘쌍자현상(twin-phenomenon)’이라는 건축 개념을 정립하였다. 쌍자현상은 두 개의 반대되는 현상이 상호배타적인 관계가 아닌, 상호보완적인 관계에서 동시에 발현되는 것을 의미한다. 헤이그 로마 가톨릭 교회는 알도 반 에이크가 쌍자현상 개념을 정립해 나가던 시기에 지어졌던 건물로, 실제 건설까지 이어졌던 그의 첫 번째 종교 건축 작업이다. 본 연구의 목적은 알도 반 에이크의 헤이그 로마 가톨릭 교회에 발현된 쌍자현상을 분석한 뒤 이를 바탕으로 그가 종교 건축에 신성성을 구현하는 방식을 정리하는 것이다. 연구는 알도 반 에이크가 제시하였던 건축 공간에서 쌍자현상을 구체적으로 발현하기 위한 세 가지 방법인 형태에 직접적으로 투영하기, 구조적인 비유하기, 사이영역 설정하기를 가지고 진행하였으며 신성한 길이라는 뜻의 비아 사크라가 지나는 공간을 중심으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 헤이그 로마 가톨릭 교회는 내부-외부, 경계-무경계, 부분-전체, 질서-무질서의 총 네 가지의 쌍자현상이 발현된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 교회 공간에 발현된 네 가지의 쌍자현상은 특정한 형식이나 기능에 의존하는 것이 아닌, 사용자가 공간을 직접 경험하는 과정에서 신성성을 느낄 수 있도록 유도하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck developed the architectural concept of the "Twin-phenomenon" through his study of primitive civilisations. The Twin-phenomenon refers to the concurrent manifestation of two opposing phenomena with a complementary relationship. The Roman Catholic Church in The Hague was the first religious building designed by Van Eyck after he developed this concept. This study analyses the manifestation of the Twin-phenomenon in the Roman Catholic Church in The Hague to understand how Van Eyck expressed sacredness in religious architecture. The study focuses on the three specific methods proposed by Van Eyck to express the Twin-phenomenon concretely: immediate manifestation in form, structural analogy, and formation of the in-between. The findings show that the church manifests four dualities of the Twin-phenomenon: inside-outside, boundary-boundless, part-whole, and order-chaos. These four dualities of the Twin-phenomenon manifest within the church space and do not depend on specific forms or functions. Instead, they encourage users to perceive sacredness through direct interaction with the space.
