구어동반 제스처가 노년층의 단어인출에 미치는 영향

People use gestures accompanying verbal language to emphasize the meaning of words in communication or as means to figure out words when losing one’s tongue. Therefore, this study conducted confrontational naming on the normal elderly whose age ranged between 58 to 81 years old, examined which gestures accompanying verbal language were used the most when word retrieval latency was observed, and find out which gestures accompanying verbal language were used most and helpful to solve word retrieval latency problem. In addition, by comparing it to which gestures accompanying verbal language were used when no word retrieval latency was observed, we could verify the function of gestures.
The findings of the study suggested that gestures accompanying verbal language were used more frequently when word retrieval latency was observed and lexical gesture among gestures accompanying verbal language had a highest utilization rate regardless of existence of word retrieval latency. The case when gestures accompanying verbal language were accompanied had the highest problem solving rate for word retrieval latency while lexical gesture had the highest problem solving rate among each gestures accompanying verbal language. In other word, we could find out that lexical gestures were the gestures accompanying verbal language having both the highest utilization rate and the problem solving rate when word retrieval latency was observed. The result of analyzing when gestures accompanying verbal language appear showed that gestures accompanying verbal language to solve word retrieval latency tended to appear prior to word retrieval.
Therefore, by analyzing gestures accompanying verbal language of the normal elderly, we could verify the practical usage and function of gestures accompanying verbal language in detail.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사람들은 의사소통을 할 때 말의 의미를 더 강조하거나, 말문이 막힐 때 이를 생각해 내기위한 방법으로 구어동반 제스처를 사용한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 58~81세에 해당하는 정상 노년층에게 대면이름대기를 실시하여, 단어인출 지연 시 구어동반 제스처가 많이 사용되는지 살펴본 후 어떠한 구어동반 제스처가 많이 사용되고, 단어인출 지연을 해결하는 데 도움을 주는지 알아보았다. 또한, 단어인출 미지연 시에는 어떠한 구어동반 제스처를 사용하는지와 비교해 봄으로써 이들의 다양한 기능을 확인하였다.
연구 결과, 구어동반 제스처는 단어인출 미지연 시보다 단어인출 지연 시 더 많이 사용되었고, 구어동반 제스처 유형 중 어휘 제스처는 단어인출 지연 및 미지연에 관계없이 가장 높은 사용률을 보였다. 단어인출 지연 시 해결률은 구어동반 제스처가 사용되지 않은 경우보다 사용된 경우에 높았고, 각 구어동반 제스처 유형별 해결률은 어휘 제스처가 가장 높았다. 즉, 어휘 제스처는 단어인출 지연 시 사용률과 해결률이 모두 높은 구어동반 제스처임을 알 수 있었다. 구어동반 제스처들이 출현하는 시점을 분석해본 결과에서는, 단어인출 지연을 해결하기 위한 구어동반 제스처는 단어인출 전에 출현하는 경향이 나타났다.
이로써, 단어인출 시 정상 노년층의 구어동반 제스처 사용에 대해 분석함으로써, 구어동반 제스처의 실제 활용 및 기능을 자세히 확인할 수 있었다.
