아이스퀼로스와 에우리피데스의 극 비교: 아리스토파네스의 『개구리들』의 결말에 나타난 정치적 함의를 중심으로 = Comparing the Dramas of Aeschylos and Euripides: Focusing on Political Implications of Aristophanes’ Batrachoi (Frogs)

This study analyzes the political implications in the ending of Aristophanes’ Batrachoi (Frogs). In Frogs, Aeschylos and Euripides tragically fight for the throne and Aeschylos eventually wins. The reason why Aristophanes’ Frogs wins in the state-led festival is not unrelated to the war situation at the time. In other words, Aeschylos’ ideal of unity and harmony contains a political calculation that his ideal would be more useful to the members in war than Euripides’ criticism of reality since Aeschylos’ tragedy contains a political tendency to instill a sense of single identity as strong and honorable members of the polis. On the other hand, Euripides’ drama focuses on the rights of the weak while confirming the diversity of the members of the polis. In order to verify this argument, this study analyzes the differences between these two writers through the analysis of Aeschylos’ Eumenides in the trilogy Oresteia and Euripides’ Medeia. Centering commonly on the act of ‘killing a kin,’ these two works demonstrate how the different logic of each character conflicts sharply with each other. With similar incidents, however, Aeschylos and Euripides develop their dramas in totally different styles. This allows the readers to trace the political meaning of why Aeschylos eventually wins in Frogs.
