The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the PGC-1a gene polymorphisms and physical activity levels was associated with body composition, blood pressure and cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF) in korean college students. The PGC-1a gene were genotype in 1286 Korean college students by using the Real-Time Quantitative PCR with TaqMan detection chemistry, CRF was measured as the maximum volume of minute oxygen consumption during a graded treadmill testing, Body composition(height, weight, body mass index, percent body fat, waist, WHR) and blood pressure were measured using our standardized protocols. Chi-square analysis was used to test the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium based on the genotype frequencies of the PGC-1a gene polymorphism in the study population, and its relative frequency were in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Therefore, it was confirmed that a sample size(n=1286) of the current study represented the total population appropriately in terms of the PGC-1a genotype distribution. On the other hand, body composition, blood pressure a nd C RF was not s ignificantly d ifferent across the P G C-1a genotypes. Also, body composition and blood pressure was not significantly different across the PGC-1a genotypes and physical activity levels. but CRF was significantly different across the PGC-1a genotypes and middle level of physical activity. In conclusion, the current findings suggest that the PGC-1a genotype is not associated with the body composition, blood pressure and CRF in the korean college s tudents. Also, PGC-1a genotype and physical activity levels is not associated with the body composition, blood pressure in the korean college students.
