「주홍글자」에 나타난 상징과 청교도주의 연구 = (A)study on symbols & puritanism in The Scarlet Letter

국문 초록 (Abstract)

나다니엘 호손(1804~1864)은 전형적인 청교도 가문의 후손으로 그의 가문에 대한 자부심을 가짐과 동시에 그의 선조에 의해 자행된 마녀 재판으로 인해 청교도 사회의 냉혹함과 잔인성에 대한 비판적 시각을 가지고 있는 19세기의 작가이다. 그는 그의 작품 『주홍글자』에서 당시 청교도 사회의 비정함과 형식에 치우친 신앙을 비판하면서 이를 상징적 기법으로 표현함으로써 『주홍글자』는 미국문학사상 최초의 상징소설로 인정되고 있다.
본 연구에서는 호손과 청교도주의 연관성을 알아보고 『주홍글자』에 나타나는 청교도 사회의 시점에서 본 주요 등장인물들의 죄의 성질, 종류, 영향 또는 죄의 결과를 살펴봄으로써 작가가 나타내고자 하는 인간의 참 모습을 다룸과 동시에 호손이 즐겨 사용하는 중요한 상징성에 대해 규명하고자 한다.
청교도주의는 16세기 중반 영국에서 일어난 교파로서 영국국교회의 개혁과 정화를 목표로 한 신교중 하나이다. 이후 종교와 자유를 얻기 위해 미 대륙으로 이주해 온 그들은 하나님이 그들을 특별히 선택했다는 굳은 믿음을 가지고 그 교리는 법과 동일한 힘을 발휘하게 된다. 『주홍글자』에서 호손은 이러한 청교도주의에 대해 선대로부터 종교적인 영향을 받았기 때문에 하나님의 존재 자체를 부인하지 못하고 청교도를 긍정적인 관점에서 보고 있으며 동시에 선조들의 과오에 대한 죄의식을 가지고 청교도주의를 강하게 비판하고자 했다. 또한 청교도 교리에 기초를 둔 인간과 인간과의 관계를 다루고 있으며, 헤스터 프린의 죄가 용서받는 과정을 통해 진실한 하나님의 사랑을 정의하고자 노력함과 동시에 예수가 간음한 여인을 용서하였듯이 본 작품을 통해 관용과 사랑을 실천하는 진정한 기독교 정신을 일깨우고자 하였다.
『주홍글자』에서 나타나는 또 다른 큰 특징은 상징의 사용이며 이러한 독특한 기술을 사용하여 비극적인 내용과 작품 속에서 인물들을 상징적으로 나타내어 전체 작품의 조화를 이루게 함으로써 미국소설에 뚜렷한 공헌을 남기게 되었다.
호손은 『주홍글자』에서 A자에 다양한 상징성을 부여함으로써 순간순간 등장인물들의 미묘한 감정을 표현하기 위한 도구로 사용하고 있으며, 그들이 처한 상황에 따라 서로 다르게 해석되고 점점 긍정적으로 의미가 변해가는 A자를 통해 청교도에 대한 비판과 함께 인간과 인간과의 관계의 중요성을 암시함으로써 궁극적으로는 기독교의 한 교파인 청교도가 추구했어야 할 방향을 제시하고 있는 것이다. 또한 그의 작품에서 등장인물들에게 그들만의 성격과 상징성을 부여하여 그가 생각하는 죄악관에 대해 간접적으로 표현을 하고 있는데, 사악한 악마인 칠링워스는 이성적 캐릭터, 어두운 골짜기인 딤즈데일은 감성적 캐릭터, 구약성서의 헤스터를 모델로 한 헤스터에게는 복합적인 캐릭터, 마지막으로 진주인 펄에게는 깨끗하고 순수한 캐릭터를 부여한다. 그리고 이들은 작품속에서 한 사회내에서 인간관계를 맺고 서로 부딪히고 서로의 부족한 점을 보완함으로써 결국 적을 용서하고(칠링워스), 고뇌에서 벋어나며(딤즈데일), 죄를 구원받고(헤스터), 더욱 성숙해지는(펄) 결과를 이끌어 내게 된다.
호손은 『주홍글자』에서 그의 예리한 통찰력으로 인간에 대한 관심을 표현하기 위하여 상징적 수법을 사용하였으며, 이를 통해 그의 인간관계와 청교도에 대한 관심을 잘 나타내 주고 있는 작품이라 할 수 있다. 또한 상징적 기법은 작품 속의 인물들과 사물 혹은 자연물들이 다양한 상징으로 드러나 전체 작품의 조화를 이루기 때문에 독자들의 흥미를 한 층 더 끌어 올렸다는 평을 받고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Nathaniel Hawthorne(1804~1864), a writer in 19th century and a descendant of typical puritan family, had pride about his family and, at the same time, had critical sight about the cruelty and brutality of puritan society due to witch hunt conducted by his ancient. In his work『The Scarlet Letter』, by expressing the cold-heartedness of a puritan society and criticism of biased faith as a symbolic technique, 『The Scarlet Letter』 is recognized as first symbolic novel in American literature history.
Puritanism, which occurred in middle of 16th century in England, is one of the Protestants that set the goal as revolution and purification of the Church of England. Since then, people who moved to America to acquire a religion and freedom strongly believed that God specially chose them and that doctrine displayed same power with the law. In『The Scarlet Letter』, Hawthorne was not able to deny the existence of God but saw Puritanism with positive sight, since he is affected by ancient. Moreover, he tried to strongly criticize the Puritanism by having a feeling of guilt because of mistake from his ancient. Furthermore, it deals with the relationship between the men that is based on the doctrine of Puritan and through the process of forgiving Hester Prynne’s sin; he tried to define the true love of God. Simultaneously, like Jesus forgave the adulteress, he tried to awaken the true Christian spirit that practices love and tolerance through this work.
Another key feature in 『The Scarlet Letter』 is the usage of symbols. By giving various symbolisms to letter A in 『The Scarlet Letter』, Hawthorne used it as a tool to express characters’ delicate feeling in each moment. Moreover, through the letter A that is interpreted differently by the situation and becomes positive meaning, it ultimately proposes the way that Puritan, one denomination of Christian, should have sought by implying the importance of the relationship between the men with the criticism about Puritan. Furthermore, in his work, he symbolized to each character and indirectly expressed the concept of sin that he thinks. He characterized Chillingworth, the evil demon, as rational character, Dimmesdale, the dark valley, as emotional character, Hester, modeled Hester on the Old Testament, complex character, and Pearl as clear and innocent character. In this work, by relating each other in a society and redeeming the lack point of each person, they finally derive a result as forgiving the enemy(Chillingworth), breaking away from anguish(Dimmesdale), getting salvation(Hester), and maturing (Pearl).
In 『The Scarlet Letter』, Hawthorne used a symbolic technique to express the interest toward human by his keen insight. And through this, it is the work that shows the interest toward his relationship and Puritan well. Moreover, since the symbolic technique appears the human, object, or nature harmoniously in the work, it increased the reader’s interest and got positive evaluation.
