This thesis is a study of English-Korean film translation based on the theoretical framework of Relevance Theory, a general cognitive theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson(1986). It advocates relevance- oriented research in investigating characteristics of problem solving and decision making processes in film translation from English into Korean.
One of the major functions of movies is to provoke the audiences’ emotion in the source language. The audiences of the target language want to have the truest possible feel of the original meaning of the source text. Film translators must, therefore, try to deliver source text author's intended meaning to the target language audiences close as the original source text does to the source language audiences.
Translating films is more a matter of relativity than a matter of absoluteness and it is different from translating printed texts since film audiences follow stories with visual images shown in front of their eyes whereas book readers have to figure out everything only through verbal information in written texts.
As one type of cross-cultural communication, the film translation would be more difficult for the translator as he or she has to deal with implicit information through both the shown image and the written scripts. The implicit information has characteristics such as graded communicability, context-dependence, and the correlation among the information, text, and context. These characteristics restrict the communicability of the film script, causing the film translator’s difficulties in translation.
To explain English-Korean film translation more efficiently, this thesis relies on Relevance Theory. The theory sheds new light on the translation phenomena in general. Encouraged by Gutt's proposal of the close relationship between translation and the relevance principle and his recent findings in translation study, this study adopts a theoretical relevance approach to all kinds of cases appeared in film translations from English into Korean. This study discusses the notion of Relevance Theory and its relationship to film translation in general and explains two major methods of film translation, subtitling and dubbing. Then it categorizes and examines various kinds of conversational examples from more than ten film scripts from both English source texts and Korean target texts. In so doing excerpted data from both languages are compared and analyzed to find out how well the relevance principle is applied in translating processes. In order to produce optimal contextual effects with minimum processing efforts, English-Korean film translators should strive to overcome the linguistic and cultural barriers and express the intended meaning of the source text author in such forms as are natural to the target text audience. By closely examining the film translation texts from English into Korean, this study deals with various issues mainly related to the image shown and other factors such as culture and language.
The thesis concludes by showing that various translation strategies such as picture-corresponding translation, substitution, foreignization, domestication, and deletion are useful to deliver relevant information in film translation. However, what matters in film translation is not what kinds of strategies are applied when translating English films into Korean but how well optimal relevance is carried out using those strategies. In other words, English-Korean film translational phenomena can be well accounted for within the framework of Relevance Theory without applying any other specific translation theory for each excerpted example in film translation. Film translation is an act of communication between the source text authors and the target text audiences. Translators should reveal the source text author's intention as much as possible so that the target text viewers can easily understand the original meaning in context with minimal processing effort.
We can assume a film translator has carried out a successful translation providing optimal relevance when the translated film makes the equivalent resultant impression on the audience as the original does on its audience.
