The decree of March 11, 1794, at the height of the French Revolution, made a turning point in the history of the Ecole Polytechnique. This decree was the signal for the birth of the Ecole Centrale des Travaux Publics, the predecessor of the Ecole Polytechnique. The Ecole Polytechnique established a new structure of French modem engineering education by realizing the ideals of the age of Enlightenment in a revolution period, and aimed to grow the best scientific and technical elite under a motto of 'For the Nation, Sciences and Glory' through the era of Napoleon. Renowned as one of the most prestigious engineering schools in France, the Ecole Polytechnique of 200 years' tradition is a historical product with the French government's strong will to realize its dream of being the power of science and technology, and the cradle of modem engineering education.
The object of this paper is to research the ideological origin and foundation of the Ecole Polytechnique, and its militarization in the era of Napoleon, centering around the period from 1794 through 1815, because such processes may be an important indicator showing how the early history of the Ecole Polytechnique produced the tradition of preferentially treating the field of science and engineering from a national strategic point of view basing on a new higher engineering education system, as well as how France could be a big power of science and technology of today.
