목적 본 연구의 목적은 시민성의 관점으로 기존 디지털 시민성 및 디지털 시민성 교육의 의미와 한계, 그리고 특성을 검토하고 그것의 사회과 교육적 함의를 살펴보는 것이다. 방법 이를 위해 먼저 디지털 시민성 교육이 활발하게 이루어지고 있는 세계 각국의 사례를 분석하여 오늘날 디지털 시민성 교육에 접근하는 다양한 양상을 파악하고 그 의미와 한계를 확인하였다. 이후 시민성과 시민성 교육의 역사로부터 앞서 파악된 디지털 시민성 교육의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 방안을 찾고 사회과 교육의 관점에서 디지털 시민성 교육의 새로운 가능성을 검토하였다. 결과 세계 각국의 디지털 시민성 교육을 검토한 결과 대부분 논의가 ‘디지털’에 방점을 두고 ‘시민성’의 관점이 배제되었음을 알 수 있었다. 이에 ‘시민성’의 관점이 포함된 디지털 시민성을 확인하고자 시민성의 역사적 변천과정을 살펴본 결과 디지털 시민성의 가장 큰 특징이 참여임을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 사회과 교육에서 참여에 기반한 디지털 시민성 교육의 함의와 이를 구체적으로 실천할 수 있는 방안을 함께 제안하였다. 결론 사회과 교육에서 이루어지는 디지털 시민성 교육은 학생들이 현실과 디지털 세계의 삶을 참여를 매개로 연결한다. 이를 통해 학생들에게 새로운 학습공간과 함께 지금까지 교육에서는 온전히 다루지 못했던 미래역량 함양의 기반을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine what meaning and value the characteristics of digital citizenship can have in social studies education and present them as specific ideas. Methods By analyzing cases of countries around the world where digital citizenship education is actively conducted, various aspects of today s digital citizenship education approach were identified, and its implications and limitations were confirmed. Afterwards, we explored ways to overcome the limitations of digital citizenship education identified through the history of citizenship and examined the possibility of digital citizenship education from the perspective of social studies education. Results As a result of examining digital citizenship education in countries around the world, it was found that most of them focused on ‘digital’ and that the viewpoint of ‘citizenship’ was excluded. As a result of examining the historical transition process of citizenship to confirm digital citizenship including the perspective of ‘citizenship’, it was confirmed that the biggest characteristic of digital citizenship is participation. Based on this, various ways to practice digital citizenship education based on participation in social studies education were proposed. Conclusions Digital citizenship education based on participation practiced through social studies education will be able to establish a new learning space and a foundation for future competency development by linking students lives in the real world and the digital world through participation.
