수동태 문장에 대한 중심화이론적 접근 : 영어와 한국어의 대조분석 = A Centering Approach to Passive Constructions: A Contrastive Analysis between English and Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to show how passive constructions contribute to the local coherence in discourse segments with Centering theory. Data from an English novel and its translation into Korean are collected and analyzed. For collected English data, their correspondence with the previous utterance and with the following utterance are analyzed and the types of their translations are categorized. Their Korean translation data are also analyzed for their correspondence with surrounding utterances. The result of analysis shows that passive constructions in two languages contribute to the correspondence with the following utterance more than that with the previous utterance. In other words, they may affect the prediction of Cp rather than the determination of Cb in Centering theory. From a contrastive analysis, this paper also shows the various types of passive translations into Korean and some implications on local coherence.
