The impact of the hydrological change from the water source of the Mekong River has a significant effect on water flow and water quantity to Tonle Sap Lake, especially during the dry season which is put further influence the water quality as well. The study on identification of solutions to water challenges in the dry season would be the scenario to address the water issues for people living in floating villages along Tonle Sap Lake. This research aimed to analyze priority solutions to water issues in the dry season suitable for floating villages along Tonle Sap Lake. The results will be analyzed by using mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative analysis) to evaluate the priority solutions compiled with the central governments’ interview results and the literature review.
The result is showing that there are different priority solution choices between permanent and impermanent residents among the 5 solutions such as raising awareness on water sanitation and usage, water treatment for households, water treatment for the community, water storage implementation, and Tonle Sap Lake restoration. The residents in permanent houses raise the water treatment for households as a priority solution while the residents in impermanent houses choose Tonle Sap Lake restoration. This alternative between water treatment for households and Tonle Sap restoration could identify that people in impermanent houses focusing on water quantity rather than water quality differ from permanent house residents. Even though, the finding also indicated that raising awareness on water sanitation and usage is still useful to adopt in floating villages to improve livelihood and public health.
The significance of this study will inform the concept and action plan for governments and future researchers to develop the floating communities along Tonle Sap Lake related to water utilization, sanitation, and hygiene with effective solutions to respond to the demand of residents in those areas.
