국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 황순원(1915-2000)의 대표작 소나기를 중심으로 하여, 문학적 상징과 주제를 도자 조형으로 표현함으로써 문학과 시각 예술의 융합 가능성을 연구하고, 이를 기반으로 새로운 창작의 방향성을 제시하는 데 목적을 두었다.
황순원의 문학 세계는 자연과 인간, 인공물 간의 상호작용을 연구하며 동양적 철학과 현대적 조형성이 조화를 이루는 독특한 접근 방식을 보여준다. 특히, 소나기는 자연을 단순한 배경이 아닌 인간의 감정과 상호작용하는 중요한 서사적 요소로 묘사하여 순수한 감정과 내면적 갈등을 서정적으로 그려낸 작품으로 평가받고 있다. 이러한 문학적 특성을 도자 조형으로 전환함으로써, 문학적 상징을 시각적으로 구현하여 창작의 새로운 가능성을 연구하였다.
황순원의 소설 「소나기」에 내재된 상징적 언어와 서정적 정서의 문학적 비평을 통해, 작품의 이론적 근거를 체계적으로 분석하였다. 이를 통해 문학적 텍스트의 상징적 표현 기능을 규명하고, 상징적 언어를 시각화하였다. 본 연구는 기존 문학적 해석과 상징적 언어의 역할 및 기능을 분석한 선행 연구를 검토함으로써 연구의 방향성을 설정하고, 황순원 문학의 서사적 깊이와 상징성이 지닌 이론적 기반을 명확히 하였다. 또한, 이를 바탕으로 「소나기」에 나타난 상징적 표현과 도자 조형과의 융합 가능성을 연구하였다.
연구는 세 가지 주요 단계로 진행되었다.
첫째, 황순원의 문학적 철학은 인간과 자연, 사회적 맥락 속에서 인간 감정을 연구하며, 동양적 사유의 깊이와 서양적 현대성을 결합한 특징이 있다. 그는 자연을 단순한 배경으로 다루지 않고, 인간 내면의 갈등과 순수한 감정을 반영하는 중요한 서사적 요소로 활용하였다. 이를 통해 인간과 자연, 인간과 인간 사이의 관계를 연구하였다.
문학적 철학은 서정적이고 상징적인 표현을 통해 강한 감정적 공감을 이끌어내며, 단순히 사건을 묘사하는 데 그치지 않고, 인간 내면의 복잡한 심리와 삶의 본질적 의미를 다시 한 번 생각하게 하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 이러한 황순원의 문학적 철학과 자연 및 인간의 상호작용을 도자 조형의 관점에서 분석하였다. 이를 통해 자연과 인간의 조화와 상호작용이 도자의 형태, 질감, 색감 등 조형적 요소를 통해 어떻게 표현될 수 있는지 연구하였다.
둘째, 소나기의 주요 상징인 비, 길, 구름, 나무와 같은 자연 요소 및 소년과 소녀의 관계를 조형 언어로 분석하여 문학적 서정성과 감정의 깊이를 시각화하는 작업을 수행하였다. 이 과정에서 문학 속 자연 이미지가 도자 조형물의 형태와 패턴 속에서 어떻게 물리적 형태로 구체화될 수 있는지 연구하여 시각화하였다.
셋째, 도자 조형의 서사적 가능성을 확장하여, 문학적 모티프를 통해 다양한 관점에서 볼 수 있는 방법론을 제시하였다. 특히, 유약의 질감과 색조의 선택, 도자 표면의 패턴과 선의 흐름을 통해 소나기의 서정적 감성과 비극적 서사를 효과적으로 시각화하였다.
본 연구는 문학적 상징이 시각 예술 언어로 변환되는 과정을 통해 문학과 도자 예술의 창작 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다. 이렇게 완성된 작품을 대중에게 선보인다는 것은 문학적 서사와 조형적 표현이 결합된 독창적인 미적 경험을 줄 수 있다.
소설 「소나기」의 상징성과 서사적 요소를 도자 조형으로 구현한 작품들은 자연과 인간의 정서를 체험하게 하며, 「소나기」 메시지를 시각적이고 직관적으로 이해할 수 있도록 돕는다.
연구의 과정에서 문학적 상징을 조형적으로 구체화하는 작업은 추상적 개념을 물리적 형태로 변환하는 데 따르는 어려움과 도자 제작 과정의 기술적 제약에 직면하였다. 이를 극복하기 위해 유약의 선택, 점토의 특성, 표면 처리 기법 등을 실험적으로 적용하였으며, 문학적 서사의 정서를 시각적으로 구현하는 방법을 다양하게 모색하였다.
이러한 실험적 접근은 문학과 예술의 경계를 넘어서 새로운 창작 가능성을 제시하였으며, 소설 「소나기」의 주요 상징과 서사적 요소를 도자 조형으로 구현하는 과정을 통해 문학적 텍스트의 추상적 감성을 시각화하였다. 문학의 상징과 서사가 가진 내러티브 구조가 도자의 질감, 색채, 패턴 등의 조형 언어로 구성되었으며, 문학적 메시지를 직관적이고 감각적으로 전달할 수 있는 새로운 표현 가능성을 실증적으로 입증하였다.
본 논문에서 언급된 바와 같이 문학적 상징을 시각적으로 구현하는 과정을 통해 문학과 시각 예술 간의 상호보완적 관계를 실증적으로 연구하였다. 특히, 소설 「소나기」의 주요 상징인 비, 길, 구름, 나무, 소년, 소녀의 관계를 도자 조형 언어로 분석하고 이를 조형적으로 구현하였다. 이를 통해 문학적 서정성과 서사적 의미를 시각화하는 방안을 제시하였고, 소나기의 서정적 감성과 비극적 서사를 유약의 질감, 색조, 도자 표면의 패턴 및 선의 흐름과 같은 조형적 요소를 활용하여 표현함으로써, 작품 속 비극적 아름다움과 자연에 내포된 인간 정서를 시각적으로 전달하였다. 이러한 연구는 문학적 텍스트가 가진 추상적이고 정서적인 메시지가 시각 예술의 물리적 조형 언어를 통해 보완되고 확장될 수 있음을 입증하였다.
본 연구는 문학적 텍스트와 시각 예술이 상호보완적으로 작용하며, 각 매체의 한계를 넘어 새로운 창작 가능성과 표현의 확장을 이루는 잠재력을 실증적으로 확인하였다.
문학적 상징이 시각 예술로 시각화되는 과정을 통해 예술 간 융합이 창작의 폭을 넓히는 중요한 매개가 될 수 있음을 보여주었다.

황순원의 문학적 세계관과 자연주의적 미학을 현대 예술의 맥락에서 시각화하며, 전통 문학과 현대 예술이 창조적으로 융합될 수 있는 가능성을 연구하였다. 이는 전통적 텍스트가 현대적 감각으로 구성되어 새로운 형태의 예술적 메시지를 전달할 수 있는 방향성을 제시하며, 전통 문화의 현대적 계승에 기여할 수 있는 실질적 사례를 마련하였다.
융합 예술이 문학적 상징과 시각 예술의 조형 언어를 융합하여 창작 과정에서 두 매체가 어떻게 상호 보완적으로 작용할 수 있는지를 실증적으로 입증하였다. 이를 통해 문학적 내러티브와 조형적 표현이 결합하여 새로운 예술적 경험을 창출하는 방법론을 제시하였으며, 이는 융합 예술 분야에서 이론적·실천적 토대를 마련할 것이다.

This study focuses on Hwang Sun-won’s (1915–2000) masterpiece The Shower to explore the integration of literary symbols and themes into ceramic art, aiming to investigate the potential for convergence between literature and visual arts and to propose new directions for artistic creation. Hwang Sun-won’s literary world uniquely examines the interplay between nature, humans, and man-made elements, blending Eastern philosophy and modern aesthetics. The Shower, in particular, has been praised for portraying nature not merely as a backdrop but as an essential narrative element that interacts with human emotions, delicately depicting pure feelings and internal conflicts. By transforming these literary characteristics into ceramic forms, this study explores ways to visually express literary symbols and unlock new possibilities for creative expression.
The theoretical foundation of the researcher’s work lies in analyzing the symbolic language and lyrical sensibility inherent in Hwang Sun-won’s novel The Shower. By systematically examining the theoretical underpinnings, the study clarifies the function of symbolic expression in literary texts and seeks to visualize these symbols. Reviewing previous studies on literary interpretation and symbolic language provided the direction for this research and established a clear theoretical basis for understanding the narrative depth and symbolism of Hwang Sun-won’s literature. Based on this foundation, the study investigated the possibility of merging symbolic expressions in The Shower with ceramic art to establish an academic framework.
The research was conducted in three main stages. First, it analyzed Hwang Sun-won’s literary philosophy, which explores human emotions within the context of nature and society, characterized by a synthesis of profound Eastern thought and Western modernity. Hwang treated nature as more than a mere background; he used it as a significant narrative element reflecting human conflicts and pure emotions. His literary philosophy evokes strong emotional resonance through lyrical and symbolic expressions, encouraging contemplation of life’s essential meaning beyond mere depiction of events. This philosophy was analyzed from the perspective of ceramic art to examine how harmony and interaction between nature and humans could be expressed through the form, texture, and color of ceramics. Second, the study translated key symbols in The Shower—such as rain, paths, clouds, trees, and the relationship between the boy and girl—into a visual language, aiming to convey literary lyricism and emotional depth. This process involved investigating how natural imagery from the text could be physically materialized through the patterns and forms of ceramic works. Third, the research extended the narrative potential of ceramic art, presenting methodologies for exploring various perspectives through literary motifs. Specific emphasis was placed on the choice of glaze textures and colors, as well as patterns and line flows on ceramic surfaces, to effectively visualize the lyrical sensibility and tragic narrative of The Shower.
This study demonstrated the creative potential of integrating literature and ceramics by transforming literary symbols into a visual language. Such a convergent approach provided artists with new inspiration and modes of expression, enabling literary messages to be conveyed more intuitively and sensorially through innovative artistic forms. Additionally, this approach fosters interactions between literature and visual arts, expanding the possibilities for artistic expression by translating literary symbols into a visual medium. By visualizing symbolic relationships, natural imagery, emotional flows, and other narrative elements from literature, the ceramic works allowed audiences to directly experience abstract literary sentiments and engage with them sensorially. Presenting these works to the public highlights the potential of combining literary narratives with artistic expression to create unique aesthetic experiences. The ceramic interpretations of the symbols and narrative elements in The Shower enable audiences to feel the emotions of nature and humanity while understanding the text’s message in a visual and intuitive manner.
The process of concretizing literary symbols into artistic forms involved overcoming challenges, such as translating abstract concepts into physical shapes and dealing with technical limitations in ceramic production. To address these challenges, experimental techniques were applied, including careful selection of glazes, exploration of clay properties, and innovative surface treatments. These experimental approaches opened new creative possibilities by crossing the boundaries between literature and art. By implementing the primary symbols and narrative elements of The Shower into ceramics, the study demonstrated how abstract literary emotions could be visualized. The narrative structure embedded in literary symbols and stories was translated into ceramic textures, colors, and patterns, showcasing the potential to communicate literary messages in a tangible and intuitive manner. This research empirically verified the complementary relationship between literature and visual arts by illustrating how literary symbols could be visually interpreted. Through analyzing and materializing the central symbols of The Shower—such as rain, paths, clouds, trees, the boy, and the girl—the study proposed effective methods for visualizing literary lyricism and narrative meaning. By utilizing the glaze textures, color tones, surface patterns, and line flows of ceramics to express the lyrical sentiment and tragic narrative of The Shower, the works conveyed the beauty of tragedy and human emotions embedded in nature.
The study empirically demonstrated that the abstract and emotional messages of literary texts can be complemented and expanded through the physical language of visual art. It verified how literature and visual arts can function synergistically, extending the possibilities of expression and transcending the limitations of each medium. This study highlighted that literary symbols can act as a bridge between traditional literature and modern artistic practices, fostering innovative forms of artistic expression. Visualizing the symbolic language of The Shower through ceramic art expanded the boundaries of artistic creation, enabling a deeper understanding of literary themes in a contemporary artistic context. Such research also provided practical examples of how traditional literature can be reinterpreted with modern sensibilities, contributing to the contemporary continuation of cultural heritage.
The integration of literature and visual art demonstrated in this study empirically proved how the creative process can transcend the boundaries between the two media. By combining literary narratives with artistic expression, the study proposed methods for generating new artistic experiences and established a theoretical and practical foundation for interdisciplinary art.
