Korean Americans’ Responses to John’s Liquor Store Boycott in Los Angeles, 1991 = 1991년 로스앤젤레스에서 발생한 존스 리커 스토 보이콧에 대한 미주 한인들의 대응

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 사우스 센트럴 로스앤젤레스에 위치한 한인 상점에서 1991년 흑인 고객 리 아더 미첼이 한인 주인 박태삼에 의해 사살된 후 발생한 보이콧에 로스앤젤레스 한인들이 어떻게 대응했는지를 검토하는 글이다. 한인들은 미첼을 총도 무서워하지 않는 괴물로 표상하면서 박태삼에게는 아내를 보호하려는 용감한 남편이라는 이미지를 덧씌웠다. 보이콧에 대한 공적인 규탄을 위해 한인들은 또한 로스앤젤레스 최초의 흑인 시장 톰 브래들리와 흑인 민권운동 지도자들에게 압력을 가하고자 했다. 나아가 한인들은 박태삼을 돕기 위해 1세 한인 이민자와 1.5세 및 2세 한인 이민자들이 서로 협력하여 한인인종 관계비상기금이라는 조직을 결성하였다. 본 논문은 로컬의 정치인들과 민권운동 지도자들을 동원하려는 한인들의 전략은 성공하지 못했으나 이러한 과정은 한인들이 미국에서 비정치적인 관망자들이 아니라 자신들의 이해관계를 적극적으로 지키고자 했던 능동적인 행위자들이었음을 보여준다고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This essay examines how Korean Americans in Los Angeles responded to John’s Liquor Store boycott in which blacks protested the death of a black customer, Lee Arthur Mitchell, by a Korean immigrant merchant, Tae Sam Park, in his South Central Los Angeles store. While dehumanizing Mitchell as a monster unafraid of gunfire, Korean Americans represented Park as a courageous husband protecting his wife. Seeking public denunciations of the boycott, Korean Americans made an effort to bring pressure upon Tom Bradley, the first black mayor of Los Angeles, as well as black civil rights leaders. They also formed the Korean American Race Relations Emergency Fund (K.A.R.E.) in which first generation and 1.5/second generation community leaders banded together to support the Korean immigrant merchant. Although the Korean American leaders’ strategy of mobilizing local politicians and civil rights leaders was not successful, this essay argues that it shows Korean Americans were not apolitical spectators, but instead active agents who desperately tried to protect their interests.
