토니 쿠쉬너의 '미국의 천사들', 공동체로의 ‘발견의 여행’ = The ‘Journey of Discovery’ into a New Community in Tony Kushner's Angels in America

This essay examines the way in which collective identity functions as a central determinant for new community by focusing on the journey of its discovery in Tony Kushner's Angels in America. I utilize the concept of individualism which Kushner diagnoses as a cause of American illness to argue that the racial, gender, sexual, ethnic, and disease others are discriminated against on the basis of social identities through their daily spatial practices. Analyzing the spatial product of social interrelations, this essay suggests that individualism serves as a means of spatializing their identifications and categorizations for social discrimination in terms of the category of social identities, thus making America a place of metaphorical illness. Such new community can be achieved by transforming social identities into a model of collective identities that are less amalgamative and more open-ended, which is exemplified at Bethesda fountain as a remedial symbol of love and mercy. On the basis of this, it is argued that Angels in America proposes the possibility of new community through the progressive policy of "change," by foregrounding the geographical "journey of discovery."
