Regional identity means the unique natural environment, history, and culture that a region has. And also it is the regional image the residents have. This study presents ‘MunburyeoJangseong’ as the regional identity of Jangseong.
For the study, this thesis reviewed first the connection with 'Heungseon Daewongun', who is known as the person who have called Jangseong as MunburyeoJangseong for the first time. MunburyeoJangseong is one of the eight Buryeo's of Honam in Heungseon Daewongun’s ‘Paldopyeong’. There is no direct record that Heungseon Daewongun referred to Palburyeo, but it was confirmed that various ‘Eight Views’ (Palgyeong) appeared as a subjects of literature and painting during the period.
On the other hand, it seems that the reasons why Heungseon Daewongun called Jangseong as MunburyeoJangseong were first, the custom of Jangseong that 'Scholars respect literature', second, Kim In-hu who is the only person from Jeolla enshrined in the Confucian Shrine , and third, the existence of Ki Jeong-jin who had a strong influence in Honam.
Next, the study examined the aspect how the re-named MunburyeoJangseong was accepted in the region. It was in 1970s when the Saemaeul Movement was promoted in which Jangseong was re-named as MunburyeoJangseong within the region. At that time, Jangseong was faceing with the problems of population outflow to the city and the negative image of ‘Samseong Sampyeong’. In the early of re-naming MunburyeoJangseong was recognized as a means to improve the image of the region through the magazine 'Hyangto Munhwa' published by a small number of residents, and to inspire the residents and those who left hometown the love and pride of hometown.
In the 1980s, MunburyeoJangseong was reproduced through the events hosted by the Cultural Center. The Cultural Center held the art and literary events such as 'Local Artists' Exhibition' and 'Munhyang Festival' for the residents, artists, and youth. It caused that the local residents directly call the name, MunburyeoJangseong through such various lectures, classes, and field trip programs.
Since the municipality was implemented in 1995, various projects such as the ‘Hong Gil-dong Excavation Project’ and the ‘Fragrant Yellow City Project’ have been carried out, focused on regional development and publicity. Nevertheless, MunburyeoJangseong shows its existing through the erection of a monument engraved with MunburyeoJangseong and the cases that MunburyeoJangseong is mobilized whenever the events related to literature ('Mun') was held.
Lastly, the study reviewed MunburyeoJangseong as a regional identity, focusing on two key words, 'hometown of literature' and 'hometown of fidelity'. Jangseong has a literary identity derived from regional figures who symbolize the academic and literary tradition, such as Byeon Yi-jung, Kim In-hu, and Ki Dae-seung. This identity can be confirmed through the projects such as the ‘Pilam Seowon Maintenance Project’, Gosan Seowon’s Dalgakbari Seonbi Culture Experience School’, and Munhyang High School.
In addition, Jangseong shows an identity as the hometown of fidelity derived from Seo Nung, Song Heum, and Park Su-ryang who are symbolized by filial piety and integrity, and Nam Mun-chang’s activities of fidelity through the Uibyeong (Righteous Army) in the late Joseon Dynasty. The identity as the hometown of fidelity is steadily revealed through ‘Integrity Culture Experience Education’ and ‘The Righteous Army Re-review Conference’.
‘Mun’ of MunburyeoJangseong has been interpreted as learning and literature. And also, MunburyeoJangseong has been referred to along with the word, ‘Seonbi Spirit', which encompasses filial piety, integrity, fidelity, and righteousness. Therefore, MunburyeoJangseong contains all of the traditional figures, historical events, and regional image of Jangseong. Accordingly, the study presents MunburyeoJangseong as the regional identity of Jangseong.
