The liver transplantation is now widely accepted as an effective therapeutic modality for end stage liver disease. The fiest liver transplant was performed in human on 1963 by Dr Starzl, but liver transplantation developed slowly over the next 15 years because of problems with technical aspects of surgery and the high morbidity and mortality associated with existing immunosuppressants. After then the improvement of surgical skill and introduction of new immunosuppressive agents has accelerated the development of the liver transplantation. The overall goals of liver transplantation are to prolong the patient's life and to improve the quality of life, however, the careful selection of appropriate patients is essentia.
The purpose of this article is to review the general patient's selection criteria for liver transplantation, especially in Korea.
