동아시아 유학의 근현대 굴절양상 = The Modern Refraction of Confucianism in East Asia

국문 초록 (Abstract)

근대전환기 동이시아의 사상적 지형은 크게 볼 때 정통사상인 유학 중심의 사상적 굴절 혹은 분화로 특징 지워진다. 이를 구체적으로 살펴보면 변화하는 현실에 맞선 유학의 비타협적 묵수, 현실타개를 위한 유학의 모색에 따른 절충과 재해석, 유학에 대한 내재적 부정과 외재적 극복 등으로 나눌 수 있다.
조선의 경우 그것은 척사위정斥邪衛正 운동과 동도서기론東道西器論, 그리고 유교종교화론을 포함하는 유교개혁, 변법개화, 동학東學의 대두 등으로 나타난다. 이러한 사상지형의 변화는 중국에서도 대동소이하다.
근대전환기 유학의 분화 및 대체 과정에서 우리는 두 가지 주도적인 사상의 패턴을 발견하게 되는데, 실용성의 강조와 주체성의 강화가 그것이다. 실용성의 강조는 서구의 기술과 무력이라는 현실적 힘에 대응할 수 있는 객관 역량의 강화라는 필요성에서 기인한 것이다. 주체성의 강화는 서구의 기술과 무력이라는 압도적인 현실적 힘을 넘어서는 길은 주관적 역량의 강화를 통해서 가능하다는 인식에 따라 제기된다. 전통적 개념으로 말하면 주관적 역량의 강화란 곧 심心에 대한 강조이다. 이러한 모색 역시 주관능동성이라는 정신역량의 극대화를 통한 자강自强 추구의 방법이었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The topography of East Asia during the transitional period to modern days can be characterized as the refraction or differentiation in thoughts based on the traditional Confucianism. To elaborate, there was the trend to make no compromising gestures and adhering to the conventional Confucianism, the one to make reconciliations and do reinterpretations in pursuing Confucianism to make a breakthrough in reality, and the one to be engaged in internal denial of Confucianism and external overcome of it. As for Chosun, they proposed for Confucian reform, which included the movement to defend orthodoxy and reject heterodoxy, Tongdo-Seogi Theory and Religious Trend of Confucianism, the enlightenment movement based on institutional changes, and rise of Donghak. The similar changes to the topography of Chosun's thoughts were also found in the Chinese thoughts. During the transitional period to modern days, two major thought patterns rose to the surface as the Confucian schools were differentiated or replaced with other philosophies. They were the emphasis on practicality and strengthening of subjecthood. For the former, they understood the necessity to increase their objective capabilities in order to respond to the Western technology and forces, which were so very real at that time. The strengthening of subjecthood was suggested based on the perception that they could overcome the real, overwhelming power derived from the Western technology and forces by strengthening their subjective capabilities. In the traditional sense, the strengthening of subjecthood was to stress the mind. All those efforts were part of the struggles to their self-strengthening through maximizing their mental capacity in subjective and active ways.
