기존의 품질경영 관행연구는 대기업을 중심으로 이루어지고 있어 중소기업의 자원 및 역량 제약을 고려한 연구의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 경기도내 280개 중소 제조기업을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사를 기초로 8개 품질경영 관행의 범위 및 깊이가 기업성과와 품질성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 결론적으로 기업들이 추진중인 품질경영 관행의 범위가 증가할수록 기업성과는 향상되었으나 무용한 관행범위가 증가하면 품질성과와 음의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 특히 과거 연구에서 도출된 핵심요인 중 품질교육을 제외하면 성과와의 관계가 유의하지 않아 중소기업 품질경영 관행연구에서는 품질교육과 품질경영 관행범위가 가장 중요한 것으로 확인되었다. 품질경영 관행범위에 따른 그룹간 성과차이를 비교한 결과 품질성과를 개선하기 위한 범위의 임계점이 기업성과를 개선하기 위한 임계점보다 더 높게 나타나고 있어 성과목표에 따라 품질경영 추진 노력이 달라질 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 일부 품질경영 관행의 경우 품질성과 및 특정산업의 기업성과에 유의한 것으로 나타나 실무적으로 품질관행간 우선순위를 판단하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Existing research regarding quality management practices has mainly focused on large firms. This study targets small and medium enterprises(SMEs) under the limitation of resource and capability because their roles in the industry and economy are very important. We surveyed 280 manufacturing SMEs in Kyung-gi Province and analyzed the effects of breadth and depth of eight quality management practices on corporate and quality performance. Results show that breadth of quality management practices has positive relationship with corporate performance and the breadth of unuseful practices has negative effects on quality performance. Critical factors of quality management addressed in previous studies except for quality training are not statistically significant. Note that quality training is the most important factor emphasized in literature related to quality management in SMEs. To enhance quality performance, critical point of quality practice breath needs to be higher than the efforts of increasing corporate performance. There are quality management practices having an effect on quality performance and corporate performance in a specific industry so that practitioners can make a priority decision between practices.
