특집 논문 : 생태철학과 생명 ; 환경윤리에서 생명 논의의 윤리적 함축과 전망 = The ethical implication and prospect of Life argument in environmental ethics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 문명의 발달로 전례 없는 환경이나 생명 관련 문제들이 발생하고 있어 많은 사람들이 그것들에 대해 고민을 하고 있다. 그런데 사실 이 두 문제는 별개의 문제가 아니고 아주 밀접하게 연관되어 있기에 같이 논의되어야 한다. 환경은 생명을 가진 존재들을 둘러싼 것을 지칭하는 말이고 그 환경에 둘러싸인 것이 바로 생명이기 때문이다. 그런데 생명의 정체를 밝히는 작업은 간단치가 않다. 그럼에도 이런저런 이유들로 사람들은 보통 생명이라는 현상은 그 자체 소중히 여겨야 할 가치를 가지는 것으로 이야기한다. 그러한 가치를 사람들은 흔히 본래적 가치라고 한다. 환경 윤리와 철학에서 논의되는 주요 문제들의 큰 줄기는 바로 여기에서 출발한다. 생명이 가치를 가지고 그래서 소중히 여겨져야 한다면 그것을 유지시키기 위한 조건들로서 그 주위를 둘러싸고 있는 환경의 어떤 것들도 어떻게든 소중한 것으로 여겨져야 하기 때문이다. 그래서 환경 윤리 및 철학적 논의에서 소중히 여겨야 하는 대상의 범위는 인간 생명에서 시작해서 그 생명을 가능케 하는 존재인 다른 생물적 환경이나 무생물적 환경에까지 점점 확장된다. 그리고 이러한 존재들의 위상 및 가치에 대해서 면밀히 검토하는 것이 환경 철학과 윤리의 핵심적인 주제가 된다. 물론 이러한 과정에서 생명의 정의, 생명의 범위 그리고 생명의 가치와 관련한 여러 철학적 문제들이 등장하게 되지만, 무엇보다도 주목해보아야 할 문제 중의 하나는 그러한 것들에 가치를 부여하고 소중히 여기는 데서 발생하는 각 개체생명들 간의 갈등 또는 각각의 개체생명과 전체생명들이라고 할 수 있는 ‘온생명’이나 ‘생태계들’과 같은 전체들 간의 갈등의 문제이다. 여기에서는 이러한 문제들을 몇몇 철학적 논의들을 통해 검토해 볼 것이다. 그리고 끝으로는 인간의 생존과 지구생존의 위기를 맞고 있는 오늘날 이러한 논의들이 가지는 윤리적 함축 및 그것의 실천가능성에 대해 간략하게 탐색하면서 이러한 문제의 효과적인 해결을 위한 앞으로의 작업방향을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

These days, human beings face unprecedented problems occurring in the field of environment and life, with the progress of civilization. So many peoples are much concerned about these challenges. However we must explore these together, because they are closely related. The term environment refers to conditions surrounding a life form, and so-called life is something surrounded by environment. But It is not so easy to define and identify life clearly. Nevertheless people say that life is valuable in itself and so we must treasure it. That is the very intrinsic value problem. The main issues in the environmental philosophy and ethics start from this point. First we confer intrinsic value to the human life and in turn to all other living things. But these individual lives on which intrinsic values are conferred can`t exist independently of other living things including non-living things. They have need to interact with each other to sustain their own life. If so, other living things and non-living things have to be conferred the same value. Therefore intrinsic value conferring objects are extended from human life to non-living things or life as a whole, that is, `global life`, `ecosystem` and the like. Several issues, such as the definition and the boundary of life, appear from this extensionism, but central to the process of extending intrinsic value to the several objects is the problem of conflict between an individual life and life as a whole. Thus in this paper I focus on these arguments some philosophers have made and examine the ethical implications of this arguments. But this work is not easy. And finally I suggest a future direction of this study.
