Written by 13th-century Dominican Friar Vincent of Beauvais, the Speculum historiale is not a popular ‘classic’ in the common sense of today. For the contemporary readers, impassable barriers exist at the levels of languges and the written medium (that is to say manuscripts and ancient printing versions), and even scholars are never thinking of translating this vast medieval encyclopedic work into a modern language. Nevertheless, this book represents important historical and cultural heritage that contributed much influence during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. It is also one of the indispensable books for historians to study medieval history and culture. The book was conceived and compiled as a manuel for mendicant preachers of the 13th century and was revised under the auspices of King Louis IX to insert a historical propaganda advocating the French royal power and legitimacy. The Speculum historiale demonstrates the way of historical compilation, the organization of knowledge, cultural symbols, historical perspectives, and scholastic culture in the high Middle Ages. It also influenced many historical works and hagiographical traditions from the 13th-16th century.
