As construction industry becomes larger and more complex, much information is going into each part and phase. For this reason, collaboration is emphasized among participants in various fields of the construction industry. Therefore, the building design process has to change. However, problems occurs on the existing building design processes that are accomplished with focus on the outcome goods and followed in project or by the team leader. In the United States, the AIA(American Institute of Architects) California Council focuses on collaboration and the coordination, which, pursues change and perfects cooperation in the integrated building design process.
Also, the BIM(Building Information Modeling) paradigm of 20th century is a new concept technology in construction industry. It is a process of effecting optimum integrating, re-using information, and expense reduction throughout the life-cycle of a building. Also, it establishes a base for the integrated building design process to build a collaboration system. But, many problems are exposed such as mismatched plans, construction delay of building during its life-cycle. Therefore, the existing building design process has to change and collaboration is emphasized among participants in various fields.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze existing building design process and integrated building design process based on BIM using a IDEF0 methodology. And then, it establishes a desirable domestic integrated building design process application plan focusing on the design phase of domestic cases.
The composition of this paper is as follows,
In chapter 1, the background, objectives, method and scope of the research are described.
In chapter 2, we depict the definition of the Integrated Building Design Process of the AIA California Council, the concept and trait of BIM and the Integration DEFinition0(IDEF0) methodology of the design process analysis through the theoretical consideration.
In chapter 3, through the BIM-based cases, we draw the rapidity(accuracy), efficiency and cost reduction in the traits of the BIM.
In chapter 4, we draw problems from the existing building design process. Also, this paper of the Integrated Building Design Process based on AIA California Council's demonstrates the flow of the Integrated Building Design Process using a IDEF0 methodology. This IDEF0 methodology compares and analyzes each phases between the existing building design process and the Integrated Building Design Process.
In chapter 5, we interview and analyze the domestic firm's cases focusing small architectural firms using BIM-based. We choose small architectural companies because small architectural companies have better conditions better than big architects company. Also, this study is limited to three domestic architectural companies which are three architect firms. It compared and analyzed each project and it grasps a domestic integrated building design process in present condition.
In chapter 6, the conclusion of this research is described.
As a result of analysis, flowing conclusions are included ;
Firstly, problems occur on the existing building design process that are accomplished with focusing on the outcome. It makes much errors because of 2D-based information. Another problems is that collaboration doesn't go on smoothly. But, integrated building design process is accomplished with the collaboration and the coordination which pursues change and perfects cooperation.
Secondly, BIM is a process of effecting optimum integrating, re-using information, and expense reduction throughout the life-cycle of a building. Moreover, it establishes a basis for the integrated building design process to build a collaboration system.
