The Hyeumwon site in Paju (History No. 464) is a large-scale architectural site of the Goryeo Dynasty located in Yongmi-ri, Gwangtan-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
It was a place where the royal palace was used to prepare for the king's pilgrimage and the functions of a private institution for safe passage. The total area of the site is about 23,930㎡ and the total length of the perimeter of the outer wall is about 610m.
Based on various relics and achievements such as the discovery of numerous artifacts, it is drawing attention as a relic comparable to "Gaesong Goryeo Palace (Manwoldae)" and its value is highly valued.
This study was initiated to study the construction method of the site construction of the Hyeumwon site in Paju, a representative architectural site of the Goryeo Dynasty. In particular, the purpose of this project is to present the Roof Tile Reinforcement method, the first construction method used in the Hyeeumwon area of Paju, and to contribute to the research on the construction of the site during the Goryeo Dynasty.
The Roof tile reinforcement method is one of the most basic methods of building and civil engineering processes. This construction method has not been known until now, and it is the first confirmed case in the architectural site.
In order to study these methods, in-depth analysis was conducted around the outer speech of the Hyeeumwon site in Paju. The outer walls include all the ministry areas of the Hyeumwon area, including the building district, so we could look at the overall location and construction of the site construction methods.
The location is divided east to west in the shape of a plane 'ㅅ', and the south side is open. The cross-sectional form is a longitudinal downward direction, with the east and west high, the center low, and the longitudinal downward trend. In other words, there are three locations: the top of the ridge, the slope of the ridge, and the valley.
In accordance with these various locations, various construction methods for the construction of the site were also used. The Roof tile reinforcement method is divided into the Roof tile reinforcement method, the Leaves paving technique, the Stonework method, and the Rammed earth method, among which the Roof tile reinforcement method is the most notable.
The Roof tile reinforcement method is a process that is equivalent to the completion of the process of creating the basic land, and is a construction method that finishes by laying tiles on the foundation made of clay. The roof tiles were constructed to strengthen the durability of the foundation and the foundation, thus solidifying the ground. In other words, the stability of the upper structure was secured by strengthening the ground constructed on the slope. Therefore, this technique was applied mainly to the ridge. Such construction methods have not been confirmed in architectural relics so far, and they are the first to be used at the Hyeeumwon Site in Paju.
However, this study showed that the Roof tile reinforcement method was used in the Rammed earth fortress during the Goryeo Dynasty. Examples include Ganghwa Middle fortress, Jeju Hangpaduri fortress, Gimhae Goeup fortress, and Pyeongtaek Bifa mountain fortress. The date of the construction of the relics was around the 13th century, later than the Hyeeumwon site in Paju. These relics were analyzed as a waxy layer with roof tiles reinforced, and the overall aspects showed that it was the same method as the Roof tile reinforcement method of the Hyeeumwon site in Paju.
Thus, the tile reinforcement method was first used in the Hyeeumwon Site, a representative architectural site of the Goryeo Dynasty, from 1120 to 1140, and was subsequently used in the Panchuktoseong from the mid-12th to the 13th century. And as the location of the construction method was expanded in various ways, it developed.
